  1. So I can put Skittles down as a 'YF2 cinnamon opaline clearwing'...wow that's a mouthful (Laughing out loud)
  2. (Laughing out loud) I'm glad you like it. I can't take credit for all of it, I had a similar thing on ferrets, so a bit of the text has come from that (I probably should have mentioned that at the start ) But the rest just came from spending too much time with my budgies....not that I think that's a bad thing (Laughing out loud).
  3. No, (Laughing out loud), he is quite the opposite, his body colour is very bright, he stands out like a sore thumb against my other guys, which is why I originally thought of 'clearwing'.
  4. Thanks guys Hmmmm. Well, I still have a while to think about it, as the aviary isn't completed yet (Laughing out loud). I wouldn't mix with any finches, as we have a seperate aviary with canaries and finches. I'd probably go with bourkes, red-rumps or cockateils. But if I do decide to mix, I think I will follow lullaby's example and not provide nest boxes, but place pairs in breeding cages. Though for the first while, the aviary will only house budgies.
  5. Skittles doesn't have any grey markings, (even though it does look like it in the picture) he does, if you look very closely, have cinnamon-ish coloured markings but they are extremely light. And I didn't think he was classed as 'cinnamon' because that dilutes body colour(???)
  6. We're building an aviary into the fernery, it's going to be fairly large, measuring approximatley 3.5-4m long, 2-3m high and 1.5-2m deep and while it will be predominantly budgies kept in there, I would like to also keep a few other species. I've been doing a bit of research and the names that came up most frequently were: cockateils bourke's parrot elegant parrot blue-winged parrot rock parrot orange-bellied parrot turquoise parrot scarlet-chested parrot rosellas nutmeg manikin white-backed munia java sparrow double-barred finch zebra finch Does anyone else have/had a 'mixed aviary' and what combinations are/were succesful for you?
  7. Thought I might share one of my photoshop creations. It applies so well to all my guys. It's a bit difficult to read, so this is the link to the larger image. http://s243.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/b...BudgieLaws1.jpg It's not quite finished, needs a few more budgie pictures (thus I need to buy a few more budgie's, when I told my parents this, I just got 'The Look' (Laughing out loud)) So if anyone is willing to donate some pictures of their babies, it'd be much appreciated, I don't want to go stealing people's pictures without permission, and if anyone has any idea's to add to the list, I'm open to suggestions, I'd love to make it longer.
  8. Charely is just gorgeous! The third picture is brilliant, he looks like he's saying "how dare you interupt me when I'm burrowing in your hair" All my little "darlings" love hair also (especially Skittles), but they prefer to chew on it (Laughing out loud). And I agree, claws to the nose and lips arn't exactly pleasant, Skittles latches onto my face when he wants to groom my eyelashes and eyebrows. :fear
  9. Is 'rainbow' an actual variety? All of the literature I've read has pretty much said that it is a broad term for particularly colourful budgies. :fear
  10. They certainly are handsome. Love the 5th picture, looks like he's singing. And the flight picture's are awesome :fear
  11. Went into the pet warehouse today just to have a squiz, told myself (and was also told by mum) not to buy anything....and ended up coming home with two new babies. This is Pixie And this is Gizmo Sorry the pictures arn't the best, it's a bugger trying to photograph through the quarantine cage bars and I didn't want to take too many and stress the little ones out further.
  12. Hey, I'd watch out for other domestic animals, such as cats. They've caused a few problems for my canaries and zebra finches and they're aviary is in the backyard. And in the summer, I'd only put them out in the mornings or early evening, otherwise it's just too hot.
  13. Hi Denise, My budgies love the occasional bit of weetbix, but you have to keep in mind that some of the ingredients & minerals in it can be harmful. Such as zinc, which is very toxic to birds in large amounts. I just checked on the box and there is 1.8mg of zinc per serve (2 weetbix biscuits), which isn't all that much, however, budgie are quite a bit smaller than we are, so perhaps it should be given as a treat. EDIT I just had a glance through my "Budgie Files" and I found the website on zinc poisoning in birds, if anyone was interested: http://www.wingedwisdom.com/ww14eiii.htm
  14. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what Skittles' colouring is? I've been reading up on colouring and mutations (and have wasted most of the ink in the printer...oops ) And I've come to the conclusion that he is a YF2 clearwing, but I'm only an amateur so I may be way off the mark . Cheers
  15. Same as my guys, they're generally always out. But if I need to get them back in quickly, (and "step up" then "in your cage" or "go home" doesn't work, which is more often than not! (Laughing out loud)) I find millet seed or banana, or another bit of fruit thats really sweet, works a charm.
  16. My guys Lazing about Nibbling on sprouts....mmm sprouts "Look, mum, no hands!" And of course...Kisses ...Kisses And more Kisses Ahh....time for a snooze Teddy thinks he's above all this frivolous nonsense
  17. Thanks guys . Yep, when I first noticed he was looking a little on the skinny side, I kept a close eye on him and he was eating normally throughout the day. However, the last couple of days he has seemed to 'fatten up' a bit and is finishing his moult. (But Skittles has never been a big budgie and I have had him since he was 6 weeks old and he is now just over a year) I remember reading about the effects of moulting on budgies and I'm positive that weight loss was mentioned, but do you think I could find the website again? (Laughing out loud) (though it may have been a book ) Will still keep an eye on him though, just in case. P.S: Thanks Feathers, I finally got it the right size! (Laughing out loud)
  18. Haha, that's too cute. Love the third picture
