  1. My birds do this too. I thought it was to cool down on a hot night at first but they seemed to do it in all weather - just hang onto the wire right up by the roof. Thanks for posting this and for your answer Elly.
  2. Thanks for the details Denise but Geelong might be a bit far to go for me. Nic
  3. They are beautiful birds, love the colours. I am in the Bayside area of Vic. Can you tell me where this breeder is or where you found him? We are looking to get some more birds but finding a source (outside of a pet shop) difficult. Thanks Nic
  4. Thanks for your quick replies. There will be no breeding boxes so all should be okay. Thanks Nic
  5. We had our new aviary delivered and we have set it up all ready to go. I rang a local breeder from the Trading Post in my area. He has a few babies (says there aren't many babies around right now. Is this true?) and has babies that will be ready in roughly a months time. He said he could sell me some babies and some adults. Would this be okay? They will be together in the one aviary. The babies are 6-7 weeks old and feeding themselves. Unsure as to how he has them set up until I visit him tomorrow. All your advice is greatly appreciated Nic
  6. Thanks kaz. I'm going to have some natural tree branches in the cage but I want to have 1 or 2 dowels going across at the very top and back of the cage. I just haven't got access to branches that will do that job so intend to use dowel. Can anyone tell me the best size? Nic

    Budgie Photos

Great pictures. I love those chubby cheeks.
  8. I have been reading this site on and off all day picking up lots of useful info. (really enjoyed looking at pics of all your aviaries too). I have 2 questions that I haven't found covered. The roof of our aviary has a square corrugation. Hope that makes sense. Bumps essentailly with a gap of about 1.5cm squared. Should we worry about a bird escaping? If so, what can we use to block it up. Now an easy one! What size dowel is best for the perches? Thanks Nic
  9. Thanks for that tip Kaz. It doesn't have a safety door and my daughter is very worried about them escaping. I will look into this. Can I ask another question?? Please give me some tips on telling a young bird from an older one. I did see this info somewhere on the site and now I need it I can't find it! Will be looking to buy some birds next weekend and I would like to know what to look for. Thanks Nic
  10. Thank you all for the welcome and advice. I have checked out the FAQ section and learnt a lot. Wonderful informative site you have here. Looking forward to posting some pics when we get up and running. Aviary is delivered this Wednesday. Nic
  11. Hi I am new to the site and seeking advice on budgies for an aviary. We have purchased a 1500 X 1500 aviary which will be delivered next week. ~My research has told me we should wash it down with a mixture of vinegar and water in case there are harmful chemicals on the cage. Is this true? ~We are looking to get 6 to 8 budgies. Is this a good number for an aviary that size? ~Not looking to breed yet. Should I get all males, females or a mixture for a good group of birds? I believe you should have even numbers if getting a mix otherwise they can get violent? ~Is it okay to buy from pet shops. I would rather a breeder who knows what they are talking about. Anyone know of a good breeder in the Bayside area of VIC? ~The toys I have seen have colorful wood the birds seem to chew on. Doyou have to be careful which ones you buy? Toxicity? Harmful? Thanks in advance This looks like a great site - hope to chat with you more Nic
