For almost a week now, my 5 year old budgie is puffing his feathers, he seems sleepier than usual, and his tail is bobbing. He is still eating, drinking, preening, and his droppings seem normal, but his lack of energy is worrying me. I put a heater in his room, gave him some probiotics and vegetables to help him gain strengh, but it doesn’t seem to be doing much. I thought it could be his moutling pass at first, but there aren’t nearly enough feathers in his cage for it to be so. I’m unsure what to do as he still seems alert but still is sleepier and quieter than usual. Should I go to the vet or is this just a phase?

I'm needing some help with my little bug Stormy. He had a lovely pink cere when we first got him but now it seems to be brown and flaky. He is still active and eating.
We got him as a 'baby' budgie unsure how old he actually is and he's been with us for one year.

Hoping someone might be able to shed a little light on this.

In the western USA, in Oregon, Portland region, there are precious few Avian Vets. Having moved to 6 miles south of Lake Oswego area; a fancy Portland suburb where there is a bird vet, I decided to drive to the avian veterinarian’s office to meet the doctor, be aware of travel time and say hello. I wanted to know the face of the doctor who might meet my four budgies. I found the office a frantic place, due to a number of emergency visits; bird owners sitting nervously in the waiting area. I still have yet to meet the doctor, of course, with the pandemic, it’s not likely to be soon. However, i was told that a “well-bird” checkup would cost $84 dollars a budgie, with possible $150 per bird if any test was needed. Budgies in the Portland Oregon region retail for $25 each. DNA gender tests can range from $45 to $60 in young budgies. I found out that in some pieds and other mutations, cere color and detail can sometimes not be a trusted indicator of gender. There needs to be a safe way for serious bird keepers to learn how to ? DNA test our own birds correctly.

$150 a budgie for a simple test is too steep for my budget. We must find a better way.

My baby budgies just got out of the box last week. I got them out of the cage to check on them and one of them jumped a big jump. So i put it back in the cage. This morning it looked as if the back is arched and he is now the only one out of the box. Did i break it or there is hope? Maybe if i gave them calcium??!. I can't go to the vet right now because of the lockdown. I am going tomorrow but if someone could help me.

Hi, I just wanted to add a post to help other owners. My male budgie aged 2.5 years has a paralysed leg. Took him to the vet and it’s probably testicular cancer although it could be kidney cancer. Treatment if it’s testicular cancer is around $400 including diagnosing him with an x-ray. Treatment is an implant that would probably extend his life by 12 months. I’m in two minds about treatment. His quality of life is pretty poor right now and if the treatment didn’t improve this then it would be cruel to keep him alive for another year.

	Hi all!

Just last week I was moving houses and I transported my budgie Sprite in a shoebox (not the best, i know!) and i think he may have broken his toe? It’s bent back and pointing upwards and he tends to favor it yet he still uses it. I was wondering if there was anything I or a vet could do or should i just let it heal naturally?

My 3 year old male budgie Moby (indoor cage) has lost a lot of his feathers above the crest and his skin looks red, almost bloody. A few days ago he had brown discharge on the feathers, but now his feathers look chewed away and have black specks on the end of them (I hope I can post a photo) and there seems to be clear puss. I only seem to be able to find images of scaly face mite, but only his feathers are affected around the beak. He had a bad day yesterday, not eating his favourite treats, sitting very low on perch. I thought he had an infection so have been treating him with antibiotic for 4 days. It was not until yesterday I realized he may have mites. So I raced to get Avimec and have treated him with it, today he has improved, is eating again and more vocal, so maybe the mites made him unwell? He is still not 100%, but fact that he has improved makes me hopeful for recovery. I just took my other budgie to the vet last week because she has a bare tummy spot with black goo (which I thought were dried droppings)on feathers, but vet did not even mention she might have mites? Seems she may have a tumour or hernia, vet could not tell. I feel that they both have been infected with mite. I decided to research the topic, but people mainly describe scaly face mite. Any help would be appreciated!

Is My Budgie Sick ?

One of my female show type budgies has a lump that is really soft by the vent area i don't think she is egg bound, shes had this for about a week now, she laid an egg yesterday it was really small and had a thin shell, a week ago she just finished raising her clutch of babies, in the past i had seen her like this while incubating the eggs and then after it would go away, is this normal for a hen to have after raising/incubating eggs? the skin looks yellow and it was bigger a few days ago and now has gone down a bit in size their is no purple or swelling around the vent nor the skin around the lump thanks for the help

I took her to vet and was told it was swelling due to egg laying and incubating

Tomorrow, I'm taking Twitter to the avian vet to find out what I can about his feather condition and legs/feet. I'm glad to be meeting her in non-emergency conditions. They have scheduled an hour for the appointment (and charged me accordingly! LOL) so I should have a chance to get to know her, and ask lots of questions.

My first question to you... Should I take food and water with him in the small cage I'll use to transport him?

I hate to see any animal without water, and budgies are so tiny, it just seems they could go downhill fast if they don't eat when they're hungry. It never occurred to me to ask when I made the appointment...

Hi all,

I have 2 budgies and one has a blocked preen gland. A visit to the vet confirmed this and antibiotics were prescribed despite no evidence of infection (I did query this and was told that a 'side-effect' of these may be the unblocking of the gland).

The vet commented that it was one of the worst cases she'd seen and the next step after the a/b's plus increased vitamin intake (started the same day) would be a trip to a specialist, a biopsy and subsequent treatment that "......will be very expensive.....".

My question is: can the 'growth' be removed easily by a vet? My very ignorant understanding of the condition is an oil blockage that has solidified - am I close? If this is the case and taking into account how firm the vet handled the lump, is it not possible to simply break/twist it off?

I assume by now that most of you reading this are cringing so please excuse my ignorance!

Thanks in advance.....

My budgie Sammy is about 3 years old and is a prolific talker and very sociable. In the last few months he has started plucking feathers under one wing pit. He has picked it so much that it bleeds. He has had a trip to the vet and received antibiotics and anti-inflammatory which calmed it down but didnt stop him from plucking. The vet suggested mirrors in his cage and more toys which we did but he still wouldnt stop biting at his wing pits. On the next trip to the vet he suggested he was doing it because of boredom and told us to get another budgie. Again we have another budgie (young bird called Johnny) and Sammy is not interested in the new bird whatsoever. They are in separate cages and have put them together for short periods of time but Sammy runs away from Johnny.

Please help, my poor Sammy has constant blood on his face from where he was scratching under his pits - what can I do? Any advice would be gratefully received.

Hi everyone, it's been a while. Hope you have all been well.

I just wanted to recount my experience with my local avian vet — Django and I have been there twice in the past 3 days, and they have been nothing but warm and friendly, and intent on getting to the bottom of his illness.

It all started when I was home sick last Friday. I noticed that Django was doing some unusual head-bobbing which seemed uncomfortable, and his sneezes sounded squeaky and rapid. If you weren't paranoid you'd have thought it was just a passing thing. Since I am somewhat of a birdie hypochondriac (always remember: when they start showing that their sickness, it's almost too late!) and I was home, feeling a little off but still well enough to go out, I made our first appointment with this avian vet clinic. Is it strange to say that I have always wanted to bring Django there for a routine check-up just to check them out?!

They examined and weighed him, took crop and poo samples to examine microscopically and did gram stains. All good, he had a mild upper respiratory bacterial infection which is expected because he is currently going through a big winter moult. I got some oral antibiotics. Django seemed to respond well over the weekend, was almost back to his normal rambunctious self.

Then this morning he threw up a pea-sized blob of yellow mucus which scared the heck out of me. I had just given him his morning dose of Entrotil. He shuddered and shivered, and was making choking motions for a good 10 minutes. It was before 9am so I couldn't call the vet yet. I called work and asked to work from home to monitor him.

When I finally called the vet, Django's symptoms had subsided but he was looking fluffy and lethargic. The vet spoke to me personally, got all the details and booked me in for later in the afternoon, but also said that if his condition didn't stabilise, I could bring Django in as an emergency case.

Django was sleeping most of the whole afternoon, I was really anxious. He ate some food but he seemed to drift in and out of sleep. When we got to the vet she did the same routine as before, and concluded that the antibiotics for the bacterial infection had brought through a secondary fungal infection, visible from his mucous crop stain (clear this time, not yellow) and poo. More antibiotics were prescribed, whee! She said that hopefully that was the end of his infections or else she'd have to start on his blood work. She said she'd had a strong suspicion it was either a secondary fungal or thrush infection after our phone call.

Well, I just really wanted to say that it's great when you go to a vet and they are confident about what they're doing, and when they genuinely care for the sick animal. I have had experiences at my previous vet where the "avian specialist" would just pump a needle full of the strongest antibiotic and finish off with worming, and declare a clean bill of health. I felt reassured and confident of this vet's diagnosis, and even though I was really upset before going to the second visit, she made me feel so much better with her competence and even gave some tips on administering the oral treatments.

So Django is on another 4 days of Entrotil, and another 9 days of Fungilin. He's getting spoilt rotten until the treatments finish, and he's got a heat lamp going to keep him comfy. Fingers crossed that he will be all right after this and that nothing else major comes up!!

anyone tell me if there something wrong with this bird? It looks like there is something wrong with the cere. All I have managed to dig up so far is conflicting information.

Some information suggests a mite is causing it, others sugest it is a result of the bird being ready to breed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The problem bird is the blue/green one, not the white one.
