I am beginning to breed budgies again, and currently have two pairs in separate cages away from the main aviary. (p.s. hope my photos have been sized down correctly).

The first pair is a Light Green Opaline Spangle pair, and previously have had two infertile clutches so far this year, but I removed their eggs as soon as I was sure.

My second pair is a Skyblue Greywing male with Grey Opaline hen. They laid a week exactly after I placed the pair into a breeding cage – that was fast!

IMG_0335.jpgIMG_0313.jpg

This morning I checked in on Pair #1’s box (during a clean), and decided to give her eggs a shine. And found this: (might be hard to see with the quality of computer screens, but is clear on my camera).PenelopesFirstBaby.jpg

This made me very happy given the pair’s past failures, and came as a big surprise. The others don’t show anything… yet.

Thanks for reading, will keep updated. p.s. apologies for poor layout, couldn't use my 'enter' key.

I hope you mean candle the eggs, not give them a shine, we don't have to be that particular do we? l.o.l.

Glad your spangles look like it might be 3rd time lucky. They look like a nice pair.

Yep beautiful birds. The egg looks good+the pair look mature enough. Yor green female looks young so she mite have bn too younf 1st time around. But the Female has to b dark brown when they r in season/on heat?! Or am I wrong?

The cere I mean, has2 b dark brown.so she looks ready. My females stay beigy until they wanna lay, then they go dark brown. Am I confused on this issue? So that is what a Spangle looks like?

Hi Maz, I'd say she is nearly going out of condition. We don't know if that is a new picture of her also, I find if they are a nice even tan/cinnamon colour on cere they are in condition once it gets crusty looking they have been in condition for a while. Don't quote me on that though it is just my own observation.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for reading so far. To answer your questions:

Maz – the green pair are both 2010 bred, so old enough to breed the last few goes – guess they were just unlucky! And yep, these photos are between 12-3 months old, but both hens’ ceres are very dark now. Also, a spangle doesn't look quite like this, as mine are spangle opalines (the male is poorly marked though, which is why he is lacking the black markings that the hen displays). Have a look on the web for pics, you'll see how different they are compared to when opaline is mixed in (opaline is why there's green on their wings).

Currently, the nests look like this:

Pair #1

1. Laid 27.9.13

2. Laid 29.9.13

3. Laid 30.9.13

4. Laid 2.9.13

(dates may not be 100% accurate :P )

Pair #2

1. Laid 26.9.13

2. Laid 28.9.13

3. Laid 30.9.13

4. Laid 2.9.13

:)

The current standings are:

Pair #1 (Light Green Spangle Opaline Pair)

1. Laid 27.9.13 – fertile (expected 15.10.13) - not long now!

2. Laid 29.9.13 – fertile (expected 17.10.13)

3. Laid 30.9.13 – fertile (expected 18.10.13)

4. Laid 2.10.13 – fertile (expected 20.10.13)

5. Laid 4.10.13

6. Laid 6.10.13

7. Laid 8.10.13

Pair #2 (Grey Opaline x Skyblue Greywing)

1. Laid 26.9.13

2. Laid 28.9.13

3. Laid 30.9.13

4. Laid 2.10.13

5. Laid 4.10.13

6…. I expect she has more than five, but she is a tight sitter and haven’t had the opportunity to have a good look yet.

I also have a pair of ‘Red Fronted Yellow’ Turquoise Parrots that I expect will begin to lay very soon as she spends much of her time in her nest (if they’ve not started already). Here’s some pics for general interest:

Still waiting... Green Spangle pair have 4 fertile, while the other pair I am unsure as this girl just won't get off. As soon as I enter the room when she is out - she races in faster than I can act. So I don't plan to interfere too much with her. The green hen has no issues :)... Anyway, still waiting ever so patiently..

Without candling, I am fairly confident that the grey and blue pair have no fertile eggs of the seven she laid. Additionally, given that the green hen started incubating completely from day 1, this makes 3 of the 4 eggs due already, and nothing yet. Sadly, this is looking like a 3rd and 4th failed clutch. :(

Confirmed that 4 fertile eggs to green pair have died and other nest was totally infertile. Placing the green pair back into the main aviary and will try them next year. Will keep the grey and skyblue pair for another go, and deciding over an Albino Male x Cobalt Hen pair or Grey Hen and DF Spangle Male (green series) pair to replace the other pair. Hopefully the next few months see a long desired success.

Have you considered breeding your Spangles with Albino4? I bred my Spangle Olive green show budgie on left with Albino and have produced 4 clutches with multicolours+ great birds. One of their chicks came out yellow spangle+royal bly spangle (hens) I just finished breeding the 3oyal blue with a Yellow headed pale blue Rainbow+ they had 3 gorgeous chicks with startling Turquoise, pale )ellow+blue+bright blue+yellow chicks. Maybe your 2 green Spangles r not suited4 each other. Have your little parrots bred yet?

Getting back into the swing of things... The Grey Opaline Hen x Skyblue Greywing Male are currently on 7 eggs, and have confirmed that some of these are fertile - yay! In addition, my Turquoise Parrot is happily sitting on 3 eggs - should be due to hatch fairly soon, but I am unsure of exactly when, as I have no idea when she laid them - it should be very soon though :)

Hi,

Babies are definitely here! So far, there’s 4 babies, 3 remain in the nest of the Grey Opaline x Skyblue Greywing, while I fostered another out for good reason.

  1. Hatched 22nd November
  2. Hatched 23rd November
  3. Hatched 25th November (Fostered)
  4. Hatched 26th November

Here’s a bunch of photos of #1 and #2 (#4 only arrived yesterday evening, haven’t had the opportunity for some photos. The last 2 days I have also noticed #1’s eyes starting to open and its back is getting darker.

23rd November:

26th November:

image4.jpeg

27th November:

image3.jpeg

I had an issue with #2 yesterday, when I looked into the box briefly, and noticed a weird mass on its face – I pulled it from the box (difficult because of the way the cage is and the position of the box, which is why I am still waiting to pull the nest out for some good photos) to have a closer look and found a huge mass of poo and nest materials stuck to its face (rock hard) – mostly on its beak, but it couldn’t just be pulled off as it was stuck to some face skin and a little to the beak. Because of this, the baby had an empty crop and wasn’t looking as healthy as it had the day before – I think it went hungry for the night and morning before I found it. This little one’s lucky, because I didn’t plan on disturbing the hen that day! Also had a big lump on its bum. I moistened the mass with some warm water, very careful not to get it in its nose… and eventually, after some difficulties, I got it off its face (may have pulled a bit of skin, but that’s better than starving to death), but then its crop was full of air from all the crying during the removal… However, a few hours later I checked in and the crop was at bursting point, full of food – thank goodness! Here’s a before and after photo (27th November):

image.jpeg

image2.jpeg

Next is some of the fostered baby (#3) – I think it is a male, but will wait and see how well my educated guess is. I have easier access to this baby, so I have been testing out my photography on the little one and have been happy with the results:

Less than 30 minutes old (25th November) – just missed the hatching!:image5.png

26th November:

image6.png

28th November:image7.png

Finally, on my Turquoise Parrots – about a week ago, I noticed an egg tossed out. Then a few days later, another. Both of these were infertile, but there is one remaining (I don’t have good access to their nestbox, can only get a camera in to see what’s happening, and am not keen on disturbing these guys as they are pretty shy anyway). I take it the last one is also infertile, as she doesn’t sit anymore – but mating is underway!

MIKAYLA:)

Oh I am so sorry I posted on the wrong forum! DO'H!

Oh you r so lucky to hav rescued that little baby! I check all my babies+ moms daily. They r so used to it already! Even my finches. I hav never had them abandon any babies except my young lovebird pair; they r stupid. They had 3 clutches they never completed breeding+there were chicks in eggs. Then 2 were born but they didn't feed them. She's on 3 eggs again maybe 5th x lucky.:uh??? My Albino budgie bites me lightly when chicks r born but never really seriously-just warning me! She's very protective.
