Hi all,

Today I found the older of my two budgie babies dead. It was 4 days old. They were both being fed and I thought all was going well until I found it. The younger one is 2 days old. It has been fed regularly, but today I have looked a couple of times and it has either had an emty crop or very little in it.

The dead baby seemed to have been fed, so I don't know what's happened. The mother has been doing well and has been sitting In there all day other then for feeds. I have pictures of the dead one if required but I am really worried about the other one. I have hand rearing formula but don't want it to resort to that if I don't have to. Jaffa ( the mum ) is still sitting in there with the other 3 eggs so I don't want to take the littleone out if i don't have to. Please help :/

I have same problem she has 3 being fed, 4th she didn't feed it died yesterday, hoping she feeds next one.

If I'd been a bit earlier I maybe could have tried to feed mine it was still warm when I found it but couldn't revive it.

I think I'd try to feed yours it if you can, because they get weak and die quickly if not fed. After the first feed, if it has the energy to call for food she may start feeding it.

Does no 2 chick seem to have been fed yet or did you try hand rearing mix?

Hi Jaffa,

This happened to my birds also however mine didn't die, Was the vent covered/blocked in anyway? Also is this your first clutch? If it is the first time, this can happen. I hope the other baby survives and that the death doesn't turn you away from breeding budgies as it is a pleasure to have them around. I would suggest hand feeding if it hasn't been fed by now.

Sorry for confusion but i meant the second baby being dead aswell in previous post. it had a full crop as well so don't know why this is happening. This is my first clutch and was hoping to have a couple of beautiful babies. The three eggs left are infertile and was wondering when i should take them out? I don't know anything about checking the vent, it never came up in research and i don't know what it should look like so here is the picture :(

Sorry Jaffa, seems like a bad start but we all have those sort of problems. There are some things that can affect new chicks like yellow belly etc but you would have to read up on things. It's hard to know what caused the deaths without a vets advice.

I think I'd take out remaining eggs if your sure they aren't fertile, maybe the hen will lay again or you could take nest box out for a while and try again when they are in breeding condition.

Sorry about your losses, I would be upset if this happened to me, hope that you can get more chicks that live. I would agree with robyn, only take the eggs out if you are absolutly sure the eggs aren't fertile.

Thank you all for your help :) i'm certain they are not fertile, there 18 days old with no veins showing when i candle. I took off the nesting box. I dad had a theory ( probably not a good one) that the nesting box was too small? and when the dad came in they got squished

But thats just a theory

thanks again for the help

Jaffa

i think if you give your hen some moxi t in the water or some tripple c this may help baby seems to have yellow belly which just means its hatched and a tad to early or not sucked all its sack up complitly leaving space for infection to get in from next or mum or dad food anything as chick has no amunity the tripple c will stop that i feed it to nests where first few die same as that and all chicks after hatch fine

good luck next time

Hi. Where have you been G.B.? missed you little posts. and experience. How come only pet type on avatar did you give show birds away.

Sorry Jaffa, got side tracked, can't go wrong with G.B.'s advice. If your nest box was normal size it would not be that, I have 1 nest with 8 babies +parents they all fit.

Thank you all. I will give them a bit of a break for a couple of weeks then try with the added triple c or moxi. I can't thank you all enough for the help.

Jaffa

I havn't posted for a long while.

I had heart surgery in Feb to replace an Aortic valve..

I had birds on eggs when I went to hospital and they had hatched when I came home 4 weeks later.

One cock had stopped feeding the young birds and I lost the whole 4 babies. Probably too young to hand feed.

They just didn't get the feeding idea and I couldn't get their crops any thing near full.

They went back on the nest and I whipped the eggs under a pair who were proven parents.

Not ideal I know but I was desperate.

I was doing a lot of reading about the quality of water. I found articles expaining that scientific tests done on dead babies often proved the water to be a source of contamination (water source of parents). They even said that in some breeding facilities they were injecting antibiotics into the eggs. I don't know if we are allowed to link up these articles but I think if you search online for articles of the safety of water for budgies you will come across the same ones.

They tried in different places many ways of getting water to the birds and all the ways had problems. Reading these articles made me very careful about the source of their drinking water during my birds gestation.
