Hi L_J, she may not have started to sit properly yet give her some time and if she decides not to sit you may have to foster the eggs to your other pairs.

Some hens will wait longer to incubate than others. Also I have had fertile eggs be cold for a couple of days and still hatch when fostered out.

If she hasn't been incubating properly yet the eggs should be good for about 10-14 days.

Cheers Jenny

hey went and checked my mrs teddies eggs.

she had 1 in the concave the rest all pushed to the corner and she has hardly been in the nest box all day.

what is she trying to say.

Tilly + Sonic - 4 eggs

8/3/2013 - she must of laid this day instead of the day i crossed out below.

10/3/2013 - checked in the afternoon still 1 egg. checked in afternoon 1 + egg

12/3/2013 - laid woo hoo

14/3/2013 - 4 eggs.

the teddy's - 5 eggs

4/3/2013 - this one I found broken at the bottom of the cage. not sure what happened. She probably accidentally broke it. she could of even been trying to move it to the concave and it broke. dunno trivial lol.

6/3/2013 - she is sitting on it.

8/3/2013 - all good today no egg tossing.

10/3/2013 - we're at 3 eggs minus the broken.

12/3/2013 - found out she lays around 4.30

14/3/2013 - update well 7.22PM watched this be laid. does this mean this is last egg because it come late.

apples & bart - eggs 2

12/3/2013 - worked out the dates now.

14/3/2013 - she is sitting on them tight today.

have gave Tilly the eggs from Mrs Teddy, 1 broke so she got 4 added.

added some shaving into her nest box to stop them rolling about.

checked these eggs I put in 3 were fertile. so possibility the other one is fertile.

Will she cope with these extra 4?

I'm really going to have to build myself 6 nestboxes. for my breeding cabinet setup when I build it.

It will depend on how many of her own she had but you should be able to share some with your other pair when they are sitting properly.

Sometimes you will get a male that will sit in the box but they can be a nuisance and break the eggs.

Just keep an eye on them you may have to move him if he is causing problems.

Yeah his okay he hasn't broken any eggs, he is sitting in there with her sometimes.

Today I bought 1 bank of 4 and 1 bank of 2 breeding cabinets. for 150 dollars.

Just gotta customize a few things. I will have to remove the nestboxes and put them on the inside of the bank of 4.

so I can have car port access to my backyard. will upload some pictures tomorrow.

some new concaves the ones I have are made out of chipboard or mdf.

Have disinfected the whole lot and vacuumed should I fly spray them?

or is disinfected enough to kill anything that may lurk?

These will do me until I decide to use my cage fronts I bought. then I will sell off these.

when we carried these through to the back yard I tore a hole in the side of my arm chair couch suite.

Wasn't happy but oh well was only a second hand couch anyway. I can have it repaired.

Sounds like a good plan shame about the couch.

If you have some mite and lice spray you could use that otherwise a pyrethrum based fly spray is best.

took the nestboxes off today I am going to patch up the entrance with ply.

then I will be building new nestboxes to attach to the front of the cage, will give me better access.

how low can I have my breeding cabinets?

I got two bits of 4 by 4 under them to give it a gap from the floor.

My breeding unit is on weels. That gives a gap below the lowest cage of around 4 or 5 inches I think. It is enough to get a broom or vacuum underneath. My budgies seem to be fine with breeding down that low.

Yeah I have 2 inches gap at the moment I will get some wood that is higher.

Not sure when but it won't matter at the moment. I am only using my 2 bank. one right now because I have removed the nestboxes off the 4 bank one ready to patch holes and make new nestboxes for next season.

Hi L_J,

I have my 2 cage breeding cages sitting on Bessimer blocks,( cement blocks about 6" high.) if you don't have them in Tassie. Mine have never had a problem breeding in them, as long as your actual nest box is high in cage I don't think it really matters how high off the floor it is. Except when you have to get down to clean them l.o.l., now that can be a pain. :P

everyone will be relieved Tilly is down to 4 eggs. I candled them all with a lamp.

Still waiting on my rechargeable batteries for torch.

Is this normal when candling eggs to see no veins when they are close to the date of hatching?

We couldn't see through these eggs like the others. so these would be fertile wouldn't they?

Also I have a suspicion these are Mrs Teddies eggs. I have a feeling Tilly's guide feathers aren't doing there job.

She has no feathers around her vent. this would be a problem wouldn't it?

will they grow back if she has pulled these?

Tilly's eggs are expected to hatch on the 1st of April.

Apples are expected on the 5th of April

Hi, when egg is close to hatching it will be a full darkish mass in shell, no veins at that stage. If eggs were infertile they would still have a pinky see through look about them.

I also have one due from 1st april, My 4 hen's all laid on the same day, 23rd and again today. It will be busy around the 10-4-'13 or so. l.o.l.

That's great news now it will be twice as interesting to find out what colours you will get, and see who the parents are.

It does sound like the other egg is no good but it won't hurt to leave it there anyway.

Cheers Jenny
