i went out to my aviary yesturday morning to find 3 birds dead on the floor of my aviary all with a leg missing. on close inpection i found a gap in my netting after spending some time fixing it up i inpected some of the surviving birds only to find that a few have had claws taken off aswell as parts of thier toes. its really depressing and i even contemplated chucking the whole hobby in, the surviving birds are obviously shaken up and are terrified, ive gone and brought some rat poison and have started the first round of baiting aswell as making sure that the aviary is 100% pest proof now. i dont have any cats or dogs so there is no other pets to worry about when it comes to the poison, im keeping a close eye on one of the budgies as it doesnt seem to be coping very well ive m oved her into my breeding room in the hopes that she may come around so im hopeful.

A lot of us have been there with rats and/or mice.

Blocking off the access is the first and most important move you have made. Next, baiting, which you have done.

Good luck. I know how frustrating it is.

Pity you arent closer. My Cavaliers would have your rat problem sourced, killed and eaten within seconds. You will have to catch up any birds with wounds ands treat the wounds. The bacteria from bites could kill them within days if not sorted out.

I have had rats dig in when I used to have my aviaries on soil floors and have experienced what you just have. I, however, found the rats were still in the aviaries hiding behind some internal layers of brushwood the previous owner had fitted so it looked "pretty". Took my oldest Cavalier into the aviary on a lead and she showed me where they were and she killed and ate two of them. Had to take her in on a lead or she would have eaten my birds too :D Best ratter in the world our cavaliers and the oldest one has trained the other two. We dont need poisons. The dogs can source, kill and eat a rat within 6 seconds...we have seen it with our own eyes.

My eldest cavalier ( 11 yrs old ) has now taught herself to climb the conifer trees out the side as the rats try to nest in those to have their babies. She climbs 6 ft up the tree to find and kill the rats and their babies. The mother rats go into the conifers, bite off branches and make little "hammocks" and have their babies there. Cricket and Maggie and Harley find them. They tell me the baby ones are juicy and tasty :D

Awww... sorry for your losses! I personally prefer traps as I can see and dispose of them as apposed to 'smelling' them later. Good luck with your fight and I hope you get rid of them soon. Check out places around your backyard... is there anywhere they may be coming from.. piles of stuff, long grass/shrubs, **** over a neighbours fence???

The country... mmm, got you. I'd go for more traps too... the more the merrier lol... I used to have a mouse problem in my aviary when I had it on pavers. They were tunneling under the pavers and coming up inbetween them. Dad and I flooded the aviary, and flushed a few out. We then set traps and got the remainder of them. My aviary is also next to the fence of a 'community home' where the tenants don't care for their garden/backyard. They had a huge pile of cr*p next to the fence. We complained to the 'powers that be' and someone came around and cleaned it up. We haven't had mice since.

fighting vermin like rats and mice is a never ending battle hey.

I find mix up the techniques you use to get rid of them, otherwise they become smart to what you use and it doesnt work as well.

Use different baits in differenet locations, dont use the same poison as they can build up tolerance to it over generations, have seen this happen when I was using the green tomcat wax blocks, was being eaten but they werent dying, they were loving the free feed though! I changed to ratsak and racuumin(blue paste) and wiped out a family of rats in a matter of days! never had rats before but they had moved ina s the neighbour had cleared his yard.

I find flooding mice holes with real hot water effective, they dont come out then.
