Yesterday I finally got my breeding cabinet all cleaned up and back in order for my next round of breeding. So even though I'm not going to give them their nest boxes until some time in August, I'm too excited to wait until then to start my blog!

So here are some pictures to introduce this round's pairs. First off is Kevin and Teagan.

001.jpg

Teagan was bonded with a different cock downstairs in the community cage. So for now, I'm keeping this pair isolated upstairs until they show signs of bonding to each other. Then I will move them down to their breeding cage. Kevin is a sky blue spangle, possibly split to greywing, and Teagan is I don't know what, so I'm hoping to sort her out. I figure she is either DF dom pied, or some kind of combo pied. She's also opaline, some kind of dilute, and maybe spangle. I'm also hoping she's split to blue, but if not, at least I know all the offspring will be.

Now here's Donovan and Finnie:

It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be to pry Finnie's affections away from Patrick, her old beau! She seems to have taken to Donovan quite well. I'm only going to let this pair have 1 round, though, since it's only been about 4 months since Finnie raised her last clutch. I'm hoping to find out whether Donovan is split to greywing, too. And since they each have one dark factor, and I think violet, I'm expecting to get babies in any shade of blue possible. (Normals and spangles.)

My 3rd pair this time around is Aidan and Aveline:

014.jpg

013.jpg

Aidan is the one who I could never figure out why his eyes sometimes have a dark red cast to them. In these pictures, which were taken with flash, he looks lutino. But without the flash, and in real life, his eyes are black. You can only see the hint of red under certain light conditions. One possibility is that he might be masking cinnamon, or some other mutation that is plum-eyed. Well, it is finally time to find out- I can't wait!

Aidan and Aveline chose each other in the community cage. I originally planned Aveline for a different cock, but I have an even better hen for that one now, so I decided to let Aidan and Aveline stay together. I don't know what they will produce, but that is one of the fun things to look forward to. :D

They've all been moulting, and I recently read in another post that coming off a moult is a good time for them to go into breeding condition. So I'm giving them at least two weeks to be separated from the rest of the flock, and then extra time to finish their moults, if they need it. Hopefully some time in mid-August they will be good to go! :D

Aiden is lutino.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was. It's just that normally it is so hard to see any red, and I thought lutinos had red eyes all the time.

So I guess I'll expect lutino hens.

It will be interesting to see what the boys look like, to find out what else Aidan is.

Today was open-the-nestbox day!

It took about half an hour, and then Aveline and Finnie were both checking out their boxes. Finnie went all the way inside of hers, but Aveline so far has only poked her head in.

I noticed a couple of days ago that Finnie's cere was less white, and by today it is almost completely tan. She seems to be progressing along right on text-book schedule. :P

Aveline has the type of cere, that during her first moult, it puffed up to a dry brown color, and has never changed since. It doesn't flake off, it doesn't change colors. My old hen Colleen was the same way. So the only way to tell if she's in breeding condition will be by her behavior. And she and Aidan seem to be in a courting mode, so hopefully they will work things out.

As for the other pair, Teagan is still moulting, so it will be a while before I let her go in her nestbox. Kevin is flirting with her like mad, but she doesn't give him the time of day. Hopefully after her moult, here cere will turn tan, and then she will change her mind. These two are going to be on a different time shedule with their chicks than the other two pairs.

okay, thanks!

That means that if Kevin actually is split for some kind of greywing, I could get some greywing babies, again. And since he's a normal spangle, then I could get some normals, some normal spangles, some dom pieds, and some dom pied spangles.

I don't care if Teagan is not spangle, herself, although I would have liked to get a double factor spangle.

Down the road I can breed the offspring of Kevin to those of Donovan to get df spangles.

Donovan and Finnie have two eggs, now. First one laid on Sunday, second on Tuesday. They are often seen mating in the mornings, now.

No signs of mating with the other two pairs, though. I've opened the door to Teagan's box, but she has not gone in yet. Aveline hasn't gone into hers yet either. Both boxes have smooth shavings and undisturbed millet.

But there seems to be the slightest signs of ceres beginning to change, so I will just keep waiting.

Update:

Finnie has 4 eggs now. I expected a 5th yesterday, but so far, still only four. 3 are showing fertile, and it's a little soon to tell on the fourth one, so all is going well there.

The other 2 pairs have finally disturbed the millet and the shavings in their boxes. I can see the tiniest hint of tan at the bottom of Teagan's cere, so things are looking up for those two pairs. Hopefully we will see some action soon.

How exciting Finnie!

I'm really looking forward to seeing some of the mutations that come out of these pairings. It's always fun making the predictions as to what the parents may or may not be and then putting some of the jigsaw together with the breeding results.

Thank you, Nubbly. I'm hoping there will be enough babies to shed some light on Teagan and Aidan, especially.

Teagan has been letting Kevin feed her, so that is good. She goes in the box a lot, but the tan on her cere is still very pale. I hope she's not planning to skip the mating and go straight to the laying. She is the one who I used to find laying random eggs in the main cage. (And she used to be bonded with a different cock in there- those eggs may have been fertile, but she was too young, and I just threw them away as I found them.)

Good news!

At first I was alarmed, because when I went down to turn on the lights this morning, Teagan was on the floor of her breeding cabinet. But when I approached, she flew up to the perch. That's when I noticed she had a serious case of egg bum! (And on the floor where she had been sitting was a HUGE egg poop.)

She looks okay, so I'm expecting to find an egg later today. Hopefully she will be smart enough to lay it in the box, not on the floor! :)

And the best part is, after a few minutes I saw her and Kevin mating. So there's hope that there will be fertile eggs, even if it's not the first one. :D

Aveline's 2nd egg is due today, and Finnie now has 8, with pinkies expected later this week.

Well Teagan and Aveline both did lay eggs today!

I'm a little concerned about Aveline. Her first egg had blood on it, and I thought maybe it was because it was her first egg ever. Now her second one is also bloody. She seems healthy enough, flying around okay, but my thoughts now are that she either has a hard time getting her eggs out, or that she has a small tear or wound that was reinjured during the second laying.

As long as she is acting fine, I'm inclined to just leave her alone and see how she goes. Maybe that is the wrong aproach. Here are some pictures of the eggs, in case anybody wants to give their opinion:

Thank you, ladies. :D

Kaz, I will check those bloody eggs for rough shells during this morning's check. I hadn't thought of that.

And yeah, Finnie's eggs look pretty fertile. ;) I've only candled once, back when there were only four. Because every time I open the box, I can see a lot of white ones, and just a couple of pink ones (which I assume were the most recent laid.)

My concern with Finnie's is that they might not all hatch. She had a large clutch before, and I think the later eggs got addled by the firstborn chicks, because only 4 hatched. If Finnie hadn't rushed in and began her laying weeks before the other hens, I would be planning to foster some of her chicks to the other nests, to minimize the jostling.

All I can do now, is to foster some of her later eggs, if it gets to the point where I think they are in danger. Guess I'll be keeping an eye on that, too.

We have.......

A Chick! Yay!

001-1.jpg

(Hatched on day 18, by the way.) Not fed at the time of the picture, but I probably caught it too soon after hatching. Finnie's a good mom, so I'm sure he's been fed by now. :D Just look at his cute wing, and his big eye, and his cute little egg tooth! (Guess I'm just a proud grandma!) Judging by his cere, he must be a boy. Oh, and Finnie laid a 9th egg yesterday. I'm hoping she's going to stop, now that she has a little one to feed.

Aveline has laid a 3rd egg, and this one has no blood. I'm very relieved.

002-1.jpg

And Teagan's 2nd egg is right on schedule:
