Eucalyptus leaves

23 posts in this topic

I ordered some of the fresh Eucalyptus leaves from Australia. I wondered if the birds would really be excited about them. Well........they have gone bonkers over them. They are eating them as fast as I can put them in the cage. The look and smell wonderful and supposedly even their "poop" will smell like Eucalyptus. I guess that's a good thing. Wish I had my own special tree to just go out and pick them each day. I offered a couple to my Cockatiels and they, too, are interested and are nibbling them. But the Budgies are the ones that can't believe what they have found clipped in their cage. Anyone here try them yet?

well since there is like 30 odd different Eucalyptus tree in aussie I don't think they would stop at just one sort, since wild budgies fly to different areas at differant times.

My lot LOVE the ones I leave on the nature branches I get from my garden for them, they rip them up straight away then start on the bark. It's great just to watch them.

I have a eucalyptus tree in my garden and they are scared stiff of it. I put it on top of their cage and they immediately flew down to it as they do but almost veered away from it as if they didn't like the smell. Strange.

Koalas only eat two or three types. If you feed the wrong type the Koala will starve.  Maybe the same with Budgies????

According to the source.......is it okay to post a link? I hope so.

www.budgieworld.net The Budgies prefer only 2-3 kinds of trees and that these are the favorites. It's like my Budgies were starving to death. They truly ate them as fast as I could clip them in their cage. Lots of bickering to ge close to the leaves. I ordered a lot of these leaves since they had to travel so far and it'll be interesting to see how well they keep in the refridgerator crisper. According to the information on the site the birds will love them even if they dry out completely. But to serve the soft green ones first and save the dried until after the best are gone. They went after them like they "remembered" them and were starving. Imnpossible I know, but, it is something to see. I can't wait to offer them some more.

That is a really interesting link-I do often feel as if they SHOULD have access to eucalyptus leaves as they are after all part of a budgies natural diet. I'm going to send for some of those and see for myself.Thanks.
