Looking around the site I'm amazed by the beautiful budgies that everyone has. I notice most of them seem much fatter and seem to have a bigger head then the ones I've kept...

Is this a different type of budgie to mine? And is it okay to keep these different "types" of budgies together?

Reason I ask is that I'm looking to add a new hen to my home and I want to make sure both my current budgie and her will get along.

I also feed my budgie on different types of seed (both from the supermarket and stuff I buy at a bird "specialist") along with a supply of different fruit and cuttlebone. Am I not feeding my pets correctly? I mean could that affect their growth?

Is this a different type of budgie to mine? show budgies can be bigger but primarily have a lot more feather

And is it okay to keep these different "types" of budgies together? Yes...no problems...show type budgies are generally quieter and more easily handled

Am I not feeding my pets correctly? I mean could that affect their growth? variety is key, good quality seeds, fresh fruit and vegies, natural branches like gumtree, peppermint, bottlebrush, some mashed boiled egg and so on all makes for a healthy budgie

Thanks for the answers! Where is the best place for me to get seed? Are there any brands you would recommend?

I dont buy brands of seed as I have hundreds of budgies and buy my seed in bulk. One thing I do know is you never buy plain brand seed as it has "filler seeds" which arent any good for the budgies and have no savings for the buyer.

Stock feed stores sell seed. If my supplier does not have any seed available, I go to a stock feed/farm store. I check through all the bags of seed to see what kind of seed is in their. The birds will not eat some of the seeds, so the bag with the less "filler" seeds is best.

Seeing as you only have 2 budgies & one you have had for 4yrs or more,I think your feed is okay.

But any of the better brands at the super market, would be okay.I sell 5kgs to a bloke I know,he has

2 budgies,Get to know one of the breedersmthat buy in bulk & they will most likely sell you some. :D

I get golden cobb budgie seed, it doesnt have any filler seeds in it. I get 5kg bags for about $12. This suits us fine as we only have 15 birds.

Seems like this is an old topic that has been started up again :) I was wondering though, what do these filler seeds look like and how can you tell if the seeds you buy have them? Thanks

Filler seeds arent a type of seed. Its the wording used to describe any seed in a blend that birds wont or don t usually eat. Cheapie supermarket seed often has wheat in it...........cheap and takes up space and weight in a bag..........not for budgies as a rule.

Sorry my fault, didnt read the date. Im not sure about budgies but I used to buy a different seed that had alot of wheat (i think it was wheat with the husk on) and sorghum in it and neither of these were ever eaten by either my budgies or teils. I only buy seed now that doesnt have these in it.
