AGY only becomes a factor when birds are stressed though our management!!!!! Good management greatly reduces ALL disease pressure. There are a number of avian vets who have written articles recently questioning the treatments offered for AGY. Link to comment

Guest DrNat
Don't do something just because someone tells you to. You have to have a reason why or be satisfied with their reasoning. Every situation is different and there are some general guidelines, but not everything works all the time or the same in different situations. If you choose to do something, do it because you are satisfied it is a good thing to do and will yield the results you want, not because someone says so. If it doesn't work, do something different. http://www.vet.uga.edu/vpp/CLERK/Son/ http://jvdi.org/cgi/content/full/19/3/256 Two articles with different suggestions for the same condition. Growing bugs in a lab is different to them growing in their natural habitat, and they evolve and change, just like our budgies evolve and change based on how we manage them and their environment. I still offer my budgies apple cider vinegar occasionally because they seem to like it and it seems to be a good general tonic because acid does kill many microbes, but not acid loving ones. If they had it all the time, it might cause them problems too with overgrowth of acid loving bacteria. If they don't want to drink it, they don't have to, but most choose to. Maybe it tastes different to them than it does to us. I spit out raw fish, but cats seem to like it, and so do some other people. Another behaviour I have noticed is some hens who throw their calcium bells in the water dish to dissolve... repeatedly. Maybe some of them like apple cider, maybe some like hard calcium water and maybe at different times for different reasons. They can change their minds just like we do. I guess you could offer them fresh raspberries and see if that helped an enteritis outbreak. Microbes will adapt to changes in their environment over time. They evolve to survive. What was generally accepted, true, correct or right once, may not be so any longer because of change. Link to comment

Acid Ph is BELOW 7 and Alcaline is ABOVE. Therefore by adding ACV we are lowering the Ph. Maybe you knew that already but I was getting it mixed up so sorry Pearce for the wrong info. Megabacteria proliferates in the Proventiculus of the budgie and by lowering the Ph we are keeping the fungul growth in check. I think what caused the misunderstanding is the reference to the notes taken at the lecture of Dr Phalen: "To grow the fungus needs: * A Low oxygen environment * Narrow range of above Ph 3.0 to 4.0 starts to grow & above rapid growth * Needs serum to grow (product from the host bird-feeding each other etc)" Surely this cannot be correct. How can that be, that would make its optimum conditions aciddy and I understood that fungus grows in alcaline conditions. Daz?????? Link to comment

Alcaline water increases fungi growth which causes disease. So by adding apple cidar vinegar, you are lowering the ph to slightly acid. which in turn stops the fungi growing. So that article must be incorect or I have got the wrong information from various articles on the web. Edited May 5, 2009 by Pearce Link to comment

Most health shops sell capsules, hand cream etc., so there must be something going for it. I have had two people contact me on the use of AloeVvera as a natural wormer and also a tonic and pick me up. The first person places a whole AloeVera leaf in his drinking water for four to five days every two months and says there is no algae forming while it is in the water. The other is from Les Gill and he uses Aloe Vera on his birds. Keep your birds in top condition by growing and using Aloe Vera in your aviary's day to day management. Aloe Vera is a miracle cure for most diseases in birds. 1. It helps with digestive disorders caused by birds eating infected foods. 2. It is a wormer and laxative. 3. It is excellent on cuts and sores and will stop cuts bleeding and act as an antiseptic. 4. It can be used as a spray and acts as a conditioner. 5. It stops bacterial and fungal growth. 6. It gives your birds greater stamina. 7. It helps prevent egg binding. 8. It will help control a lot of other diseases. The active ingredients in AloeVera are: • Alion, Baralon, Natalon, Chlorophyl, Emodin, Resins, Albumin, Essential oils, Gum Arabic, Silica, Phosphate, Lime, Iron. The minerals it contains are • Vit. A, Vit B1, Vit B2, Vit B3, Vit C, Vit E, Vit B12, The minerals it contains are • Calcium, Chloride, Chromium, Copper, Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium, and zinc There are also 17 amino acids and 5 enzymes. The enzymes are most beneficial to the birds whole system and will activate the functioning of any sluggish parts. This means an improvement in health and well-being, and a noticeable difference can be observed after 48 hours. To use Aloe Vera make a gel juice by the following method. • Fill a one litre jar with rain or filtered water, and place a 115 gram piece of Aloe Vera leaf in it. If using as a wormer of laxative leave the thick skin on, otherwise trim it off. (Remember, put water in jar first) • Place jar in refrigerator for 24 hours. The leaf will float at first and when ready will sink to the bottom of the jar. • Dilute the solution 50/50 with water and give to your birds daily. • The original solution can also be topped up and the Aloe Vera leaf will be effective for 14 days.. Remember you cannot overdose your birds on this. Important points 1. Do not shake or stir the jar as the enzymes are very sensitive. 2. Keep refrigerated, enzymes are destroyed by heat. 3. Change water daily. 4. Solution can also be sprayed on birds for external parasites. 5. For cuts and sores use the gel that oozes from the leaves. Original text, Keith Flockhart Link to comment

With the Aloe vera you slice off the hard outer skin first then put the inner gel part into water. I copied and pasted that section for easier reference. Link to comment
