Well, twitch and his girl have shown no signs of breeding. he is mating more with the cage front. I might move them into a better breeding cage, and put another pair or two down to breed.

Things look promising with all the other 3 pairs.

I had a cock that was always masturbating the perch and he had no clue till I switched pairings and put him down to an experienced hen in prime condition for him to get the idea. :)

that is what I am going to have to do Renee. Twitch is ready to go, he just needs another hen. I might pair him with a good grey I have.

Well, the good news is that I just checked the nestboxes before going to bed, and there are 3 eggs in with caesar and his girl, 3 eggs with Dumb and his girl, and the first egg with my green opaline male/lute, who I am now called Luthor, and his lute partner.

Very exciting.

No, my lute girl i bought off Cec Gearing.

Unfortunately Renee that little one did not travel well. I probably should not have taken one so young. She is no longer with us.

It is exciting Liv, very exciting.

Hi Dave

Long time no see. Some great birds, lets hope they produce for you. I hope to see some of them at the table shows later this year.

Well, it looks like Caesar and his hen have 5 eggs, and a sixth one is going to be layed any minute now.

Dumb and Kestral seem to be stuck on 3 eggs.

Luthor and his lute were slow starters but they are now up to 5 eggs as well.

Twitch and his lady friend were moved from the cage they were in, to a newer cage, more room, better box, and although they preen and feed each other, there appears to be no action.

I am going to swap his lady friend out and put in a grey hen (as shown below)

I am also thinking of pair up some other birds. Not sure of the pairings. My birds are listed at the beginning of this thread. Any thoughts?

I thought maybe Dumber with either my Double factor white spangle, or I might put him with a grey cinnamon wing hen

jester might be good to go with the white DF spangle. That way, I am not putting a grey cock with a grey hen.

I need more greens. Might look for some green hens at an auction at the weekend.

Caesar and (insert name here) seem to be stopped on 5 eggs. She layed one off the perch and it had cracked. I think she might have been having an issue with that one, as it did not look exactly normal. Oh well, 5 eggs for a first clutch is okay.

Dumb and Kestral seem to have stopped on 3.

Luthor and his lute have 5.

I am not sure how many if any of these are fertile. I have no candled them, preferring to just wait and see.

I have removed the grey green hen from the cage with Twitch and put in Kiwi, a grey opaline cinnamon winged dominant pied (picture of her below)

twitch__macaroni.jpg

cec_flecked_kiwi.jpg

The grey green hen is the one on the left in the above picture, and Kiwi, Twich's new partner is on the right.

I have put Dumber in a cage with Cino - a grey opaline cinnamon wing. She is not the heaviest set bird, but she had a great blow on her, and good posture (pics below)

spikeydumber.jpg

cino.jpg

This is such a terrible picture of her. I will look for another one.

The last pair have been paired to each other, feeding each other for over a year now. I know that you are not meant to put opaline to opaline, but this pair deserve the chance to have young together. (I know, I know, show breeders decide pairs on the basis of a lot more detailed thought that apparent love, but I am happy with this pair). Grey opaline male (earl) to grey opaline female (latte) (picture below).

The pitter patter of little feet has finally come to my garage.

Caesar and his lovely lady have a little one. nice and dark pink, with food in its crop, this little one was born today and looks very active. I good start to the 2009 breeding season.

Looking forward to more hatchings over the next few days.

The three new hens that i put in breeding cages have all been checking out their nestboxes.

Eggs are still being laid by Caesar's lady and Luthors lute.

Kestral and Dumb should have their first hatch very soon as well.

And I am off to my club tonight where members are selling some birds. Who know what I might come home with. Taking my big travel cage - LOL.

How many eggs does Caesars hen have then if she is still laying ? Generally when chicks show up they stop laying.

Correct me if I am wrong. You said Caesar and hen have five eggs and one just hatched. you also said she still may be laying. Given eggs hatch every second day and incubation is 18 plus days........the maths just doesnt add up

Lol, i was a bit confused their as well, if she already has chick's, then she well and truly wont lay more until her next clutch.

She has not been consistent with her laying of eggs. She sat since day 1. She has also seemed to have some difficulty laying an egg at one stage, and she layed one off the perch which ended up in a big poo pile and was cracked when I found it.When I left for work yesterday i counted 5 eggs. When i came home there were 6. I did not expect anymore as I was sure she had finished, as i said in an earlier post. anyway, the first must have hatched today, as there was no chick this morning when i checked before work, only 6 eggs.If the truth be told, I was a little worried about her at one stage, that she might have been egg bound. She was eating and all, had a big egg bum, but I could not see any big droppings, and she was a little more fluffed than usual. I think she was having trouble laying an egg, and when she finally got it out, it came out with a stack of poo and and was laid off the perch. The shell was not very thick. she has extra calcium in the water, but it does not seem to have helped with this egg. I know that they are meant to lay every 2 days, but there was about a 4-5 day period with no eggs. Then the cracked one, and now we have another egg, and a young one hatches the next day.If you take the fact that the little one might be right on time, or a day early, from the very first egg she laid, plus the delay in the middle with her experiencing some difficulties, then it is entirely possible. The 18 days rule is not hard and fast for hatching, nor is the egg every 2 days. There is always the chance for 1, or even 2 day swings, and things such as her egg difficulty have to come into account.

Lol, i was a bit confused their as well, if she already has chick's, then she well and truly wont lay more until her next clutch.
I know that Mattdog2. I stated that she laid an egg BEFORE the chick had hatched.

I am thinking that 4 out of the 6 are fertile, based solely upon the eyes of a very novice breeder - LOL

I will try to take some more pics later.

I tried to take some pics of the newly hatched today, but mum was very defensive, not working with me.

The interesting thing was I really think the newborn has red eyes. No dark colour visible under the skin, so not plum or black. Red would mean that Dad is split Albino. Interesting if he is.

We will see.
