The latest tragic update on the victorian bushfire crisis is that atleast 14 people have sadly lost their lives and grave fears are held for atleast another 25 missing. Over 100 homes have been lost.

My thoughts go out to all those who have lost loved ones and property ^_^

The reports aren't saying yet where the deaths are but I would say probably in the areas where most houses were lost, Bendigo, Kilmore, Coleraine, Horsham

thats what i thought and in knowing that and having iner knolage i guess having no idea whats going on is making my body in shoke hence the bad feeling and with her being protected im asuming my mum dad and brother also would be as they are with her so i can see the fire from here thats what scares me more and my birds were all okay at 830pm no deaths so thats a good thing but no news from anyone since and last woreds spoken were we all have to stay in side now love as the ash and ambers are to big and you cant see more than two feet in frount i will keep you posted

i did talk to my baby and told her that she was safe and even if the fire comes really close and she has to stay carm as panic is what ends lives she is very with it and told my she knows and has not forgotten that she is going to do what she is told to the t so i know she will she is strong

what frightens me is if the fire comes at them mums plan was they all jump in car which is parked out in the court waiting and lay low on floor till it passes me i would of spent day digging a hole in the red clay just bigenough for body lenth and 2to 3 foot deep if it came lay in that with soked woolen blankets covering whole body but thats me im not their i should be their

she is blessed and protected you are right thanks darl for reminding me of her strenth xxxxx

My thoughts are with all who have tragically lost their lives and for their loved ones who are left behind to mourn. It is sad that so many were recalled early to the bosum of The Mother of All. They have been called home and are no longer afraid.

I grieve with thee.

Current numbers sitting at 25 but still predicted to reach 40 ;)

6 in one car at Kinglake, 6 at kinglake west, 4 at St Andrews(just near kinglake), 3 at humevale, I'll update when I can add the others.

Don't know details from other hospitals but The Alfred alone is treating 18 people for severe burns.

Hi guys, sorry I know this post is pretty depressing but I feellike I should keep adding updates as they appear for those that might not have such easy access to the news here. Current toll is confirmed at 35 and expected to rise. For comparison the Ash Wednesday fires lost 47 in Vic and 28 in SA from recollection.

Thats horrific. I'd say conditions over there must have been worse yesterday than Ash Wednesday given that fire fighing equipment and practices, as well as public awareness and communication, has advanced so far over the last 25 years and yet a similar number of deaths have occurred. I hope this weather brings the much needed relief!!

Actually Hills there are concerns that this weather change may actually make things worse as the change of wind direction is pushing fires into areas that were previously safe and the bush is still so dry.

Bushfires Scorch Southern Australia, Leave 76 Dead (Update2)

By Gavin Evans

Feb. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Australia’s deadliest bushfires have left at least 76 people dead and destroyed 640 homes, prompting the deployment of the army to help firefighters in southern Victoria state.

Police figures confirmed the nation’s worst bushfire death toll. More than 400 fires struck yesterday and crews are battling 14 large blazes today, according to the Country Fire Authority’s Web site. More bodies are likely to be recovered as fires are brought under control, police said.

“This is not over yet,” state Premier John Brumby said at a media conference at Kinglake, one of the worst affected areas, the ABC reported. “It’s a tragic day, a tragic weekend in our history. The impacts on families are just devastating. I feel devastated.”

Two weeks of record temperatures and hot northerly gales across the southeast of the continent yesterday fueled the flames that have killed more than the so-called Ash Wednesday fires of February 1983, when the previous record of 75 people died in Victoria and neighboring South Australia.

It appeared a number of the weekend’s fires may have been deliberately lit, the state’s deputy police commissioner Kieran Walshe told Sky News.

Many of the latest deaths occurred around the towns of Kinglake and Wandong, about 65 kilometers (40 miles) northeast of the state capital Melbourne. The town of Marysville has been almost completely destroyed, and about 50 homes were destroyed around Bendigo, Brumby said.

Southerly Front

Temperatures in Victoria have plunged after reaching a record 46.4 degrees Celsius (115 degrees Fahrenheit) in Melbourne yesterday, as a southerly front moved across Australia’s southeast today, changing the direction of many of the fires.

The largest blaze is in the Kinglake, Kilmore area, where two fires joined yesterday and where most of the deaths occurred. About 120,000 hectares (296,000 acres) are burning and the very large perimeter means it will be “days and days” before crews will be able to contain the fire, Stuart Ord, spokesman for Victoria state’s environment department, told Sky News.

“Hundreds” of homes have probably been destroyed across the state and more remain at risk today, he said.

The dead reported so far include at least two children, and have been found in both cars and in homes, Victoria Police’s Walshe said. Many are likely to have been overtaken by the rapid pace of the fires yesterday, fuelled by winds of more than 60 kilometers an hour, Ord said.

Lessons Lost

The chances of surviving a fire while sheltering in a car are “remote” and people should leave early or prepare their homes and remain in them, New South Wales Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons told Sky News. The lessons of the Ash Wednesday fires appear to have been forgotten, he said.

“It’s been, I think, the worst day in our history,” said Brumby, whose parents’ house was among those saved by firefighters yesterday, the Associated Press reported.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is in Melbourne today, where state officials have sought assistance under the national disaster plan. Supplies have been requested for emergency relief centers in the worst-affected region and they will be provided, he told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

“This is a terrible and devastating tragedy,” Rudd said. “The full capacities of the Australia Defense Force are at the disposal of the government of Victoria if any practical request is made.”

Army Moves

Twelve army bulldozers and support crews are being sent to Yea in northeast Victoria to help build a containment line around the town “seriously threatened” by fire, Rudd said.

Temperatures in Australia’s capital of Canberra, and in Sydney in neighboring New South Wales state, are likely to peak before the southerly change reaches them later today, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

In New South Wales, firefighters are already dealing with 53 fires, including nine large blazes, state Premier Nathan Rees told Sky News.

The largest, at Jingera Rock in the Bega Valley, has burned about 1,300 hectares and cannot be contained, according to the Rural Fire Web site. The other blaze of concern is at Peats Ridge near Gosford, Rees said.

A 31-year-old man has been questioned over a fire believed to be deliberately lit near Peats Ridge, he said. “We will throw the book at you if you are caught.”

Hot Winds

Temperatures in western New South Wales are forecast to exceed 40 degrees today as hot northwesterly winds strengthen before the southerly change.

Still, the northern part of the state is relatively free of fire risk, and the state has sent 255 firefighters, 50 tankers and five paramedics to assist Victoria, Rees told reporters.

The combination of high temperatures and changing wind direction will create “tough conditions,” Rural Fire’s Fitzsimmons said.

“The prevailing northwesterly or westerly winds will strengthen ahead of that front and also become erratic and change direction, he said. That is “quite a dangerous environment for firefighters,” he said.
