A Genetic Brain Teaser

Recommended Posts

In an aviary containing 3 hens and 4 cocks one normal olive female chick was born. Which birds were it's parents?

The Hens:

normal mauve

dark green dominant pied

olive recessive pied

The Cocks:

normal sky blue

cinnamon olive

white double factor spangle

cobalt recessive pied

I will PM the answer to anyone who has a go

I'll let others go first.. I take it that you know the hen isn't split Neville.

Cinnamon olive - Olive recessive pied?

50% normals/cinnamon 50% cinnamons

All olives?

Somehow I dont think its that simple.

Add 100% Cinnamon hens and 100% split recessive to that pairing.

Delete the 50% Cinnamons.

Nevermind Daz you are right. I didnt realise the chick was female.

My next guess is:

Dark green dominant pied to a cobalt recessive pied.

50% dark greens, 25% light greens and 25% olives.

Hmmm I have no clue... I am going to say olive recessive pied X white df Spangle... I have no idea how that would work but I figure you're bound to get some normals out of a combination like that arn't ya?

Can't the Double Factor Spangle as all chicks are spangles. (Hint)

Try again JB, as Daz said the DF Spangle would give each off spring a Spangle gene making them SF spangle so that leave that one out of the running. :D

yes I found that out with Nevilles PM I should've thought about that... I was just thinking the spangle could be masking a couple of dark factors... but I should've focused on the df part :P I keep telling people my genetics is messed up!
