I have had three to try with but I think I must have done something wrong. Either that or I was not patient enough. First I had Cheeky - I got him from a pet shop and didn't get anywhere with taming him. Then Kissy - Kissy was home bred and I had things going okay with him till I moved all my budgies up to our house (they were at an old one) then he started to go 'gyke' or in other words he was hardly tame anymore. So I put him in the avairy and he is now a possible Dad. The last one I have had was Storm - I got him from budgieloverkirsty and as soon as I got him home I clipped his wings and was able to have him on my finger but he did not want to be there and would fly away. He would go to his cage whenever possible. Well thats them and now I thought maybe I would get a reall baby that still needed feeding and hand feed him. Would this increase our bond? Now heres what you can do. I have browsed this whole section and couldn't make much of it as everyone was saying different things in different places so... I would like everyone who can to post on here their opinion on the best taming tecnique. I know all birds are different but I thoughtIf I had options I could work out my own program. Thanks so much Kate P.s I have no idea about this! Edited January 19, 2009 by mysixbabies Link to comment

You need to be consistent, patient, and follow through with what you are doing. Some budgies take longer then others. There is plenty of information in the FAQ's. Elly has written up some great stuff in there too. My suggestion would be to continue with one budgie (Storm if you still have him) and take it slow, work with him daily (several times for short periods), and don't give up. It will happen, just not over night. Edited January 19, 2009 by maesie Link to comment

I tame my birds by tunneling them and by handling them a lot. i get their trust by holding them frequently. they are on my shoulder when doing house work. I sit with them while on the computer. They watch telly with me etc. I have 4 tame birds inside who all live together and they are all happy to sit with me and play around. Time, persistence and patience is the key. Also get them used to being grabbed. There are times when birds have to be grabbed and if grabbing is not included as part of the taming process then they will freak out when they do get grabbed. I grab my birds every day and they are not bothered by it at all. If they know you wont hurt them, even when they are vulnerable, then they will have no fear  Link to comment

He screeches if he even gets a hint that my hand is coming towards him from behind sometimes. I am not looking forward to the next time I have to clip his wings. Whereas budgies I had as a child let me hold them - they'd wriggle and try to get free, but not get distressed. Maybe I handled those ones a lot more- I'm sure there is something in what Liv suggested. If I get another one down the track I will try to get it a lot younger when it's still okay wtih being handled, and handle it a lot more. Cosmo was hard to tame but he tamed extremely quickly. We just used a transitional object before using my finger.... in our case, a chopstick. He was happy to step up on a chopstick and be walked around on it... and it took a week or so before he would get onto our finger instead. Eventually he preferred the finger and now he doesn't even like the chopstick anymore. He easily sits on our finger and shoulder and talks, but as I said- will NOT be held! Link to comment

Despite all the taming techniques, birds have different personalities. It sometimes only takes one bad experience to freak a bird out forever - like being grabbed unexpectedly. Maybe the grabbing thing is something you work up to - perhaps it's a natural progression from tunnelling. Link to comment

No matter what method you find works for you being it what I did or the tunnel method or others patiences is the key and short sessions with rewards at the end like millet or the favorite treat of your birds use this ONLY during training time. Keep us updated. Also birdluv, had started a journal on how she tamed 2 older birds, Claire and Hobbs you probably will want to do a search on the site for that thread and read it through also. He sits out with them while they work, and I think he loves being part of it all. Budgies are very social, so unlike some other pets, they seem to like being around a lot of activity and noise. If it won't be too distracting for you and your siblings, I would have him inside in a cage just around you for a few days, so he can watch what's going on and get used to you all. Link to comment

I will have to talk to mum as I'm not sure she will approve of that. So he won't mind my pesky little brothers and sisters around his cage poking fingers at him all day? I just feel like he is being treated like a zoo animal or somthing. Also should they have him on their finger too or (because im the main one i want him to bond with) should I just 'hold' him at first? Lots of questions Sorry Link to comment

Depends what he is like. I would try step up and sitting on shoulder first. I think that maybe you should just try taming him yourself first, but let him go to them once he's a bit more comfortable with you. It should be fine if they talk to him through the bars, make a lot of noise, poke their fingers in, etc. Interested to hear what others have to say. Link to comment

Girls can still be tamed, a lot of members on here have wonderful girls as pets, but in general boys are a little easier to tame and are much more likely to talk. Link to comment
