I said how my ex father in law had produced a black budgie chick out of a nest when he was in his teens and that was fifty years ago. I have just been talking with him about the budgie. He says others in the Budgerigar Club saw the budgie and they were all watching its development from the chick in the nest to fledging and flying around. It was seen and documented in an article in an old budgerigar club magazine here in Western Australia at the time. Chick reached the age of 6 months and died after a thunder and lightening storm late one night. It was the only bird that died during the storm. As a chick it began to feather up dark. Upon fledging it was jet black with the look of a raven...jet black glossy feathers with no other colours involved. Parents were a blue and white pied mother ...seems like it was a recessive pied by the description. Father was a green normal. In that nest was five eggs of which three hatched. Other siblings was a dark blue normal and a green like the Dad. So, there you go. Edited July 2, 2008 by KAZ Link to comment

No! the attitude from the clubs is still the same. It's more or less what they told me about my little throwback! Wait and see. But at least I have taken pictures documented it. I think there of the opinion that one bird doesn't make a new mutation! ( Just doing a little bit more documenting! ) Edited July 2, 2008 by throwback Link to comment

If you want to increase the Mutation you could mate it back to the opposite sex parent & also mate it so a couple of unrelated birds then mate the half brothers & Sisters back to it & each other, that would increase the chances of increasing numbers. A long long way to go. Anything could happen, the bird could die or one of the parents (which the hen is still breeding )could die. It might not breed. I hope if it does it's a dominate trait and not a recessive one. Your right Norm! pairing it back to the cock. Than to half brothers and sisters that I already have. Should produce more. Also keeping good records of everything. Will be a must! But I'm more excited about some of the other show budgie babies that I have produced at the moment. It's good fun!! Link to comment

But maybe they are Throwforward, not backward? But those extra bars like in The Netherlands Blacks really feels to me that it is a Throwback, seems like a much more camouflaged look that might have been an advantage earlier on in evolution…some of those rarer Parrots the Grass Parrots etc have stripes all over for camouflage, as they live on the ground Edited July 11, 2008 by Norm Link to comment
