So I told her to give them an ultimatum or else i'd make a complaint. They handed the birds over to her willingly, then she in turn handed them over to me for treatment. I expected them to be bad, as she said they had scaley face, but not this bad! There's one hen (sky violet opaline spangle) and one cock (mauve violet opaline spangle). The cock is in very poor condition, he's light as a feather and his beak is soooo bad! The hen has a badly deformed beak, very badly affected feet and nails, but over all seems to be in a much better condition than the cock. Here are some pics of them, as the treatment goes on i'll show you their progress. Presuming they make it that far(fingers crossed) - cock left side - cock right side - cock feet - cock feet again - hen left side - hen right side - hen left foot - hen right foot - both feet - After their first treatment and feed. They got wormed, given sulphadim and a soft food mix. looking a bit better already, but still horribly sick Link to comment

It is actually the person who sold the birds to the shop who did this to them - it must be months, perhaps years of neglect Edited June 9, 2008 by **Liv** Link to comment
Guest DrNat
A spot of ivomec on the back of the neck and daily application of a thin film of liquid parrafin to the feet, legs, vent, beak and skin around the beak until it clears, and trimming the beak should fix that within a month or so. The scaley mites get into wood perches as well, so pet shop will need to thoroughly clean out cages, dishes etc, and wash perches, then lightly oil/wax them with eucalyptus oil or liquid parrafin to get rid of scaley mites burrowed into the wood, otherwise the next bird on the perch will get the scaley mites as well. A light mist each month with a mite spray should be sufficient as future preventative, and any birds that have been in close proximity to these birds in the pet shop need to be treated with a spot of ivomec or a light misting with a mite spray as well. Be careful with the ivomec as too much is poison. My preferred method of application for my birds is to dip a cotton bud in ivomec and wipe a small spot of the ivomec on to the feathers on the back of the neck. Ivomec both de-louses and de-worms the birds. Take care with combinations of ingested medications on the birds as they can interact with each other to the detriment of the birds. One medicine at a time. Link to comment

Both are eating and looking okay-ish... Although the cock is still VERY light, but alot more alert. Link to comment

I think like DrNat said Ivermectin would be the best way to go with them, as it even looks like in one picture the mite has even spread to the vent area. Just the one treatment with Ivermectin is all it will need & less stress on birds already in a bad state. Link to comment
