Hello, i was just reading in the room with my budgies and they were napping and then i heard like something was falling down to the bottom of the cage, the my budgie Boris jumped off his "bedroom" perch to another one. i came up to the cage and saw him "vomiting" as i think. he was bobbing his head up and down, though iknow it says it could be regurgitation but he was moving it up and down quite violently and i never saw him doing it before. his girlfriend was nowhere around so i don;t see why he would regurgitate. what came out was whole seeds bound with something looking like saliva. he is clean and not in it but he looks tired (but it is midnight in england). now as i turned the lights on to wath him he is trying to peck his seed toy but not too bothered about it. Is he ill? is it serious? Please HELP!

Mine do the regurgitatio thing even when their mates aren't around. Check to see that he isn't skinny but otherwise I would say he is fine, just keep an eye on him.

Thank you for the reply. No he is not skinny, i am around them all day and it is the first time it happens. he stopped now and just sitting on his perch. I know you give plenty of water and rest to people who vomit but i have no clue what budgies need in such situations!

Vomiting can be serious! If you see any other sign of illness please take him straight to the vet - because birds hide illness so well, even a hint that something is wrong is best treated with caution.

Vomiting budgies show matting of the feathers on the "chin" and also on the top of the head as they flick their beak while being sick. Vomit may also be seen on the walls of the cage and in seed bowls.

thank you, Liv. i can't see matting of the feathers, he is asleep now but what worries me on both legs and not one as he usually does. The vomiting bit never repeated itself. I will see how he is tomorrow and if i see any signs of him being not well - will take him to the vet.

Sleeping on two legs rather than one can also be a first subtitle sign on illness....... :(

Have you change the brand of seed or anything lately? Two legs is unusual so keep a good eye on him.

I have changed the seeds (for Xtra Vital seeds) but about a month ago. There were no problems. It does worry me that he sleeps on both legs. I just hope he is really going to be alright. I will take him to the vet tomorrow morning but i just really wonder what has gone wrong with my poor baby budgie boy (okay he is not a baby but he is for me:) ).

Here is the explanation of both explained in our FAQ section, if it is vomiting you will need to schedule an AVIAN Vet Appointment.

Reguritation vs Vomiting

Regurgitation looks just like when the cockbird is feeding either babies or hen. They are bringing it up into their throat to feed others. They arch their head and neck and then bob their heads up and down to bring the food up. Regurgitation is an up and down movement. This is a normal behavior. Read more: Why does my budgie regurgitate for me (or another object)?

Vomiting is a bit stronger like convulsive and the bird shakes it head side to side and splatters the vomit. Vomiting is a sideways shaking of the head. If your bird if vomiting you need to call your Avian Vet immediately this is a sign of sickness.

I have read the FAQ note on that but i don't really know, i never saw him regurgitating before and he wasn't moving his head sideways but up and down and quite vigorosly. I just wonder if what comes out looks different in two situations?

Sounds like it was just regurgitation then

I have never seen a budgie vomit (only a pigeon) but i would assume it looks the same - the vomit that is

Trichomoniasis (Trichomonas gallinae) or canker is a common flagellate protozoan that infects poultry and can infect budgies crops and cause vomiting and ulceration of the crop. It is commonly transmitted by regurgitation to each other especially during the breeding season, drinking stagnant water or eating food that has gone sour. It is highly contagious to other birds. There is usually a cheesy discharge above the nostrils of the affected bird, but not always as there are carrier states of healthy birds who show no illness themselves but can infect other birds.

To diagnose this problem the vet will do a crop wash and examine the crop fluid under a microscope and see if there are any of these little flagellate protozoans swimming around in the crop fluid sample.

If this is the problem it can be treated easily with ronnivet, if untreated it is usually fatal.

Please take your budgie to an avian veterinarian to make sure.

Dr Nat is right, Bea's bird ended up having this and needed avian care.

Thank you for all replies, i am looking at him this morning he seems very active, absolutely normal, and i checked up on him in the early hours of the morning and he was sleeping on one leg! ;) it must have been just regurgitation. i just have never seen it happening before and was scared. he has no discharge, his vent and cere are perfectly clean and appetite is great (touch wood). but i will keep an eye on him. Thank you all very much!

I would say from the sounds of it that it is regurgitation. Was he doing it to a toy? or while singing and dancing? Regurgitation looks like fully formed food, whereas vomit looks partially digested.

Sleeping on two feet does not necessarily mean they are sick. My birds do it all the time. Sleeping on one foot just means that they are most likely very healthy as they are able to do that, but just because he is using both feet does not mean he is sick. If you are truly worried take him to the vet

That is the thing, he wasn't hopping or playing he was asleep when it started. I am not too worried about the moment because he is hopping on his tree happily and playing with his girlfriend:)

Did a search found this page.

Came home my budgie had a wet head and being sick, regurgitating seed up and shacking it's head to remove from mouth.

took to vet told its normal and he had put his head in his water. Next day same thing. Took to a different vet he has a yeast infection she gave him an injection and I'm giving him medicine, he is poorly now. His head is wet because or the mucus he's bringing up. I'm hoping this post will help others looking  for these symptoms
