Guest eaglesoaring11
I awoke this morning to find that one of my budgies was beakless. I found the beak on the floor of the cage, what should i do, should i feed it till it grows back, or does it even grow back? Link to comment

Guest eaglesoaring11
I took him to the vet and was told it would grow back eventually and I would have to feed him amd water him untill it grows back, she said it was just a deformation, So it was either that or euthinize, and i can't let my bird be uthinized, I have 15 other budgies, and I will maintain all 16!!! All of a sudden? This dosent sound right to me! how much beak has he got left? Has another budgie possibly attacked him? This is serious stuff, birds beaks are incredibly sensitive, this little fella could well have suffered extreme pain. Just for now, i would make available to him some porridge oats, soaked overnight in water, maybe even some farleys rusk, again soaked in water. he will need some nutrition! Bear with me, I am dashing off to try and get you some further information that may help, it will involve some copying and pasting, if thats okay with yu and board owner, Adam. But it will be advice off the best people I can think of to help, people i would trust 100% with my own two beloved birds. No identities will be revealed, just your dilemma. Anne. Link to comment
Guest eaglesoaring11
Well there is the picture of it right above your post, I went to the vet and i was told it could be saved, I have to feed it special formula food, for baby birds. She said that the beak was just a deformality and the bird was in no pain at all, all in all she will cost me about 130.00(cdn) to save her, but she is my bird and when I took her with the other 15 from the closing pet store I made a vow to myself to Take care of all my birds, the others have been checked and are all fine. The vet gave her some kind of antibiotic and I have to give it to her twice a day. It would have cost me 15.00(cdn) to have her put to sleep, but when i broke my nose, my parents didnt put me down. She is a part of our family, and always will be!! :doctor: Sorry, I have nothing more to say on this matter, I am upset and I am confused. thanks Link to comment

I came across three seperate website that say if beak filing is done wrong it can cause the beak to fall off...Please ask him if this was done. Even the slightest error from a vet or well meaning person could cause this to happen. Im not a vet....this is what Im reading. Im just thinking that if this wasnt caused by fileing...there could be something more serious to the other 15....Im still searching for more info and will post if I find anything and another (these replys will, i hope be of use to anyone who comes accross beak probs... Good grief. I have never ever heard of this before where a beak just fell off and the bird is still alive. 90% of beak mutilation occurs when the bird is attacked or it gets it's beak stuck in something, panics, and yanks, but in this situation, it's almost always fatal. A friend of mine did experience this very thing with her cockatiel who got evidently got his beak wedged between bars of his cage. She found him dead in the morning with the beak and cere completely dislocated from the head. So tragic. Budgies ARE prone to parasites and fungus in the beak, cere and legs and feet. However........you would see some evidence of this before it got so bad that the beak fell off, if it would even go that far. I have never heard of a beak and cere growing back???? Please correct me if I am wrong. I would like to follow this thread to see what the outcome is. I hope the little guy makes it. a vet KNOWS beaks don't "grow back" if the beak "FELL" off. Now broken yes .... tips and such will grow back but a bird does not generate a new beak/cere like a starfish does a new leg/tentacle. Did this person mention previous injury? (lack of blood can cause necrosis and it will fall off). Did they mention blood loss? Weakness? Facial deformity such as fungus overtaking the beak and choking off the viable tissue that "feeds" the beak it's blood supply? okay, so its a bit gloomy looking, but at least you have questions to put to your vet, and some points to note, i.e, has the WHOLE beak come off, or just the main part, leaving a bit of beak behind for regrowth? Everyone is wishing you only the best for your bird and wish only for a happy healthy ending. Please keep us informed if you will how your bird progresses, there is so much we could all learn from this if you are willing to share. Anne Link to comment
Guest Cindy
How is the little beakless bird going? I have never heard of that happening before, but strange as it sounds last night i had a horrid dream that my Bluey's beak fell off, and woke up thinking I was crazy. Hope its not an omen. Please keep us informed, as we all care Cindy Link to comment
Guest eaglesoaring11
Chirpy, Thank you so much for the Info that you got, I know it took a long time for you to get! As for him, He is doing well, the redness that you can see in the picture is now gone and is a white color, he's been keeping up with the medications, and Is eating formula and mixed seed with water (crushed) He has become very afffectionate since he lost it. He Is going to the vet again this coming friday for a check up :doctor: You know what, I haven't even named him yet! I usually don't name my breeder birds, just A,B,C....etc! I will let the kids at my wifes daycare come up with a name! I will keep you all updated as to his condition. Thank You, Jay Link to comment
Guest Julie
Oh Jay,I really admire you for what you're doing. Sorry if this is stating the obvious but don't forget that the seed should be huskless? (I don't mean that to offend, just trying to help) Julie Link to comment

Guest eaglesoaring11
The beakless budgie passed away after a long time of administering the meds and the food/water being fed by the tube. Tweety died form an infection in the place that the beak was. As her new beak was protruding through was when the infection took place and expanded through out the body. We tried everything to keep her alive, we put the incubator by the bed when i went to bed, took him to my office everyday, basically we gave him 24 hours of attention, But there are limited things that we cant do, and higher powers take over the body, and there was nothing we could do. Don't get me wrong this was a very sad house for a few days, but we are getting things back to normal. It was not an easy thing to do when we noticed that Tweety was dead that morning. I still have that feeling that there was something that i could do, and that will never leave my mind. Thank you for all your posts and comfort, it was much appreciated. The feelings of ' I should have done more' are common and normal in the early days of grief, even when (especially in this case) you couldnt possibly have done more. These feelings will ease as time goes by. God bless you for showing such devotion and care towards yur little bird. Much warmth, Anne. Link to comment
