Daz, do you treat the melamine with anything before putting your birds in to make sure of no mites or anything, if so what?

 

Kaz, any pics of the fronts you have with wire mesh?

What other sort of materials do people use apart from ply and as Daz is using here, melamine.

Mine are melamine as I find it easy to wipe clean.

I will be sealing the edges today with white "No More Gaps" to stop any bugs getting in to crevices. But that will be much latter. I have the Auction to go to this morning.

 

I found that hardest thing in building Breeding Cabinets was finding the Cage Fronts and Trays. I am luck as I now know people that can make them to my design.

 

Pet City at Mt Gravatt and Brendale Produce at Brendale have breeding cage fronts in different sizes. They are good too. I buy my fronts for around $15au.

Interesting - I am drawing up my cabinets today .... I thought with the tray's that I would use a thin melamine and put a handle or something to make it easrier to pull out on it so it can come out and be wiped cleaned ....

 

Now I may re think about the cage fronts too

Up date.. Being a Sunday and spending more than half of it at an Auction, it didn't give me much time for the cabinets.. But

 

 

I got started puting in the fronts.

 

 

 

 

Just one to go.

 

 

 

Now the perches. I still have to cut the 16mm round to go with the square.

I'm already thinking to go to all wire. I have forgotten how awkward the wooden cabinets are to clean.

Even though the wire ones make a mess as they are a lot less contained they are easy to wash and disinfect and no mites.

Even with the melamine you can't exactly use water to wash them out or the wood swells.

 

It's just a pain! The birds don't appreciate the new ones I supplied. The breeding hens with there copious amounts of poop some spray the walls like cement render.

Doesn't take many breeding seasons and they end up a chew up and invested mess.

 

But what do ya do ?

 

Did you buy any at the Auction? Do you know what 25 went for?

I bought those recently.... a pack of six but I bought twelve and my breeders have just been put in them with some of Daz's nestboxes attached. Later on I will make some melamine frames to sit them on...three vertical on rollers

The one I have is a double with a slide out divider. It is still sitting in the shed I haven't set it up yet. I will trial it later in the month and weigh it up against the wooden ones.

Those are readily used here. The fronts are removed and a breeders front added. I hear they work out good. You just need to put in shelves to support them.

All that is needed is 4 round perches, dividers and the trays and this one is done.

 

I tried hard Throwback but the ones I want kept getting out of my reach. With a budget of $600 a pair I thought i'd have a change. Oh well.

 

Lot 25 was the Opaline Cinnamon Grey Green. Hannington bred and put up for sale by Troy Holmes. Fetched $70. Which is about right for the bird.

WOW $70 for a bird related to Chidels 02 National winner and Watsons BSNSW winner.

He had a Hanno hen at BRASEA that went for more than that. Ya can never go by the catalogue descriptions though hay!

I use the same wire ones with breeder doors on each side... I have 6 of them currently and removed my wooden breeding cages as these are much easier to clean and my birds like them. I've been fairly sucessfull so far with fertility while using them. The only issue I find is that the perches don't fit front to back due to where the wires go horizontal at different heights on the front versus back. So I have to put them side to side. But so far they do just fine with them arranged like this and no issues with them mating. The males still hop from one perch to another even though I don't have them set at the same height this round as a test.

the cabnets are looking great... I wish I could find some wire fronts like yours here, but they aren't as nice as yours look.

I like your set up there Ravengypsy pity about the perches not going the other way...

 

Daz, you mentioned before about your stand that you stack your breeding boxes on, is it the same one you are using at the moment? and Where did you get it from?

 

Also, I'm reading a book at the moment and it suggests attaching your breeding boxes to the wall of your bird room (having the wall as the back of your cage) have you ever tried this before?

Dazza - sorry Daz does it matter what timber to use making the breeding cabinets?

I went to the hardware this morning and there were 100's of types ....

Can i use thin timber too as the chipboard i could hardly lift ...

Any timber is fine as long as it's not treated and is structurally strong enough for the job. 12mm external ply is good.

Up Date time.

 

I did a bit more to night.

 

 

Got the perches in and glued the bottom strip for the dividers.

 

The divider guide is glued in with liquid nails construction grade. It is good enough to hold a mirror to a wall.

The Tape is to hold it down while it cures.

 

Rounded 19mm square perches.

 

16mm round perches.

 

These are screwed from the back. It is a bit of a pain to change them but they won't be moving under the hen at the wrong time.

All that has to be done is the top rails and the trays and this one is off to the breeding room.
