Invasion In The Cage

okay I have an issue with Cockroaches. First off I have a phobia of them, I literally run screaming from the room when I see there and have in the past, pasted out because of them. So when I went to the cage today and was changing the feed over and found on in the feed dish I sort of froze, it took a lot of effort to throw the feed dish into the garden close the cage and then run screaming from the area!

 

I went back to look and found two others and *hangs head in shame* passed out, which is where my sister found me. She and her boyfriend removed the two that where on/in the cage one sitting right next to flame who seemed un phased by this (shes got more guts then I do)

 

Anyway and suggestions of how to get rid of them?

I totally understand you not liking cockroaches... I'd probablly spray the cage with some safe cleaning product that you can get from a pet supply store or petshop... just ask them what they suggest... I'm not sure if that will stop the cockroached but it would make me feel cleaner :hap:

Yeah going to head there tomorrow. I just feel so embarssed as I fainted at the sight of it and flame sat next to one and didn't care!

They like to hide outside my front door, and as soon as l step outside fully, they run out all over the place. I hate them so much.

Catnip is a natural repellent to cockroaches. The active ingredient is nepetalactone, which is non-toxic to humans and pets. Small sachets of catnip can be left in areas of cockroach activity. Catnip can also be simmered in a small amount of water to make a "catnip tea" which can be used as a spray to apply around baseboards and behind counters. This natural repellent should only be used in homes without cats!

In an empty one pound coffee can, place 1 or 2 pieces of bread which have been soaked thoroughly with beer. Place in areas known to have roach infestations.

Leave bay leaves, cucumber slices or garlic in the affected area as deterrents.

Soem of the ideas may not be such a great idea for actually INSIDE the aviary but you could maybe take a few ideas to try around the outside of the aviary to stop them getting in to begin with :hap:

Cockroaches like to hide in seed husk material and especially in the trays under budgie cages. I use the cockrach trap things....flat plastic discs with baits inside. You can also use the sticky traps like they have for pantry moths. It works especially if you can put them in the tray under the cage or raise the cage up on little blocks and put the baits or sticky traps under. I would not use a spray near my birds.

Thanks guys, next door has catnip for their cats so might see if I can get some off them and spray aroudn the base of the cage (it's off the floor so maybe that will help. Also do a complete claen tomorrow was planned anyway.

Get a bluetongue :grin:Mine come out for a wander with me and eat the roaches. I've contemplated letting them live in the bottom of the aviary on occasion, they can't climb so no worries with them eating eggs. The only thing that has stopped me is that I'm not sure what the birds would think. They might get used to them though...On a possibly more helpful note you could spray around the cage with a bird mite spray, might just deter the roaches and shouldn't bother the birds.

i dont dislike cockies *shudders* but would certinly HATE if one came to live in my cage!

They don't bother me at all, I just catch them and throw them in for the lizards. I content myslef with the knowledge that the majority of what people call cockroaches in Melbourne are actually native woodroaches which dont carry disease like their American counterparts.

 

Given how many are arond this area a phobia of them would be quite debilitating, good luck getting rid of them.
