Hello, I am a new member and my name is Zenie. I had 7 budgies however by this evening I will have 6.

I noticed my blue budgie had a really bad cut across his chest. Unfortunately he is past help, his chest is so badly cut.

The only reason I can think how this has happened is because we put a few branches from a euculaptis tree into the cage, I feel he must have snagged himself on one of the branches.

I have certainly been reading the FAQ and other sections of this community, there is a wealth of knowledge to be gained and I really am enjoying all the comments.

I will have to learn how to put a photo up of my flock for you all to see. :D

Sorry to hear about your injured budgie. Are you sure it was the branch that did it ? Might be a good time to check the aviary over for bits of wire and also check for signs of blood on other budgies, the tree branches and various areas around the aviary.

Happy to have you here :D

Thanks for the welcome Kaz. I have checked all the cage and also the other birds and I cannot find any wire and no blood on the other birds, so it remains a mystery. Bluey passed away at 3.00 this afternoon.

I am wondering Kaz is it not advisable to put branches into the cage?

Branches are a good thing for the budgies. Be very aware that if it WAS the branch, that budgies do some very silly things at times and have a few "freaky" accidents. This would be unusual and not likely to be a common thing to happen. It just makes you more aware of "possible" hazards and you tend to search for the accidents that may occur in the future. It makes you a little paranoid in a sense, but that can be a good thing. :)

PS sorry about the passing of your budgie :D

Hi and welcome.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss  .

If it was the brach that caused the injury, what I do is sand or file the sharper or 'knobbly' parts on the branches down a little bit.

It won't prevent accidents from happening, but I think it makes it just that little bit safer.

It would be pretty rare for a Budgie to injure its self from a branch, are you sure he wasn’t attached by a Hawk, they can inflict bad injuries even through the wire, with their talons. Especially if the injury was bad enough as to be fatal. Welcome to the forum, sorry about your loss.

Thank you all for your thoughtfulness and my welcome.

I purchased another budgie today(bluey 2). I was amazed that the brother of the deceased budgie immediately came up to my new bluey and really gave him a welcome, the poor thing could not move all afternoon without being preened (hope I have spelt that correctly)and kissed. Love at first sight for sure.

We often have magpies, black birds and sparrows, however we have not sighted a hawk. Because of the extent of its injury I am beginning to think may be it wasn't a branch.

Here is a helpful topic on quarantining your bird when you first bring them home

My goodness me I certainly have done the wrong thing in placing bluey2 with the other birds. Well, all I can say is thanks Kas and I will quarantine any further purchases I make.

Most of us dont know about quarantine when we first start out in keeping birds. But a few losses due to illnesses soon make us think about it. I have lost birds through illness when I did not quarantine

You need to go into your controls (at the top of page) and Edit Sig. Then copy and paste the img link of the picture you want to use into that space and save (update I believe it's called)

Give it a go and any trouble and I will fix it up for you.

Sorry I have tried, I went into control then edit signature. A huge photo came up when I pasted it in. I then tried and I thought resized it however I failed again, I then had no idea how to place the name Zenie into it (as Kaz did if you scroll back to the 21st Dec).

I know you will be able to fix it however I would really like to know how to do it myself, should I want to change it at any time.

When you fix it Nerwin how do I place the signature in when I post a message . Sorry to be a pain.

Sorry about the size of this however I need your help.

Did you use photo bucket to upload it? Try deleting it and uploading it again, this time change the size before you upload it (top right) ??? Someone else might be able to help more though...
