Do Budgies Need A Nap?

Recommended Posts

My Arny would be out of his cage all day playing and usually is. But I'm wondering is it best to let him have a nap during the day for a short while to have a quiet time?

We have a lot of wild birds in our garden and it always seems a quietish time around the 2pm mark, so am wondering if it's a good idea to settle my budgie for 1/2 an hour or even longer. :)

Thanks for your help :)

This is no help to you at all, just agreeing with you and wondering the same thing. Whether it is a good idea to make mine have "rest time" in his cage when he enjoys being out of it. would be interested to see what replies you get.

Hi Judy,

you are right about the wild birds. In a flock budgies tend to do everything together. During the day they do have preening times and a nap times. They usually have a coupe of naps during the day. I take Kazumi out in the morning, put him back around lunch time and then we have an afternoon play time before he goes home for a meal and is covered at bed time.

I find when they are babies they nap very frequently throughout the day and as they get older it is hard to catch them in the snooze position but they will do a quick doze without the head tucked. I remember reading that it is good to let them wind down and relax. I have found that afternoon time around 1-3 is quiet time and the nosiest is first thing in the am and later in the afternoon, earlier evening.

Thanks for your helpful advice everyone:)

Do you recommend a length of time they need to nap?

Feathers, when you say "we play", what do you do with your budgie when you play with him?

Hi Judy,

Kazumi is extremely tame. Sometimes I think that it isn't me playing with Kazumi, but Kazumi playing with me  In the morning he will run back and forward along the side of his cage until he gets my attention and I wake up. We have a bit of brekkie together (he loves wholegrain cereals and pears the best) and then have a bit of a cuddle, kiss and scratch. Just lately he has decided he likes flying between the computer screen and me - sitting on my head! He also likes to play under my fingers if I am using my laptop, because he is more important than anything I want to do, obviously (so he thinks).

This is Kazumi..

Peronally I would do your daily routine and when your budgie is ready for a nap he will nap. There is no certain amount of time he should nap like kids. They doze more then sleep deep during the night. Nighttime sleep is what is important and it should be around 8-10 hours.
