There are a lot of great write up's about what you should or shouldn't do. I am looking to write up a good article here for BBC on taming tips so I can add to the FAQ section. I have reviewed the different posts but was hoping we can condense and even use this post as a link into the FAQ section.

So I am asking just a bit of your time :D

1. How old was your budgie (s) when you purchased him/her

2. If you tamed your budgie right out of the nest, when did you start taming and handling the chick?

3. Was your budgie tame a little or not at all?

4. When you tamed your budgie was he the only budgie, or did you buy them in pairs, or was he an addition? Did your first budgie stay tame, and how did the taming go for the additional budgie (s)

5. What is your best tip you can give (don't say everyone else gave good tips (Laughing out loud)) what did YOU find worked well for you and WHY?

Anything else you would like to add?

Thank you!!! :)

I think you should add that it is not that easy and that it can take different amounts of time for

each budgie.

Long or short.

1. How old was your budgie (s) when you purchased him/her

Arkady: 7 weeks

Isis: 6 months

Emmett: 4-5 months

2. If you tamed your budgie right out of the nest, when did you start taming and handling the chick?

At 1 week old for the twins, Alo, Nikio and her brother. 2 weeks old for Itha and her brothers

All are very tame apart from Nikio's brother. The twins and Alo are especially tame.

3. Was your budgie tame a little or not at all?

Arkady: Not really, but he is very outgoing and smart

Isis: Not at all <still isn't

Emmett: Not tame, had him one day so far and he is going well. :)

4. When you tamed your budgie was he the only budgie, or did you buy them in pairs, or was he an addition? Did your first budgie stay tame, and how did the taming go for the additional budgie (s)

Arkady: Addition - stayed relatively tame after meeting other budgies- is a huge socialite

Isis: Addition - still not tame, but she is taming up as I am currently working on her

Emmett: Addition - will find out in months time

Izzy: Addition - Lost a little tameness after meeting Saffron, wouldn't let me scratch his head anymore :)

5. What is your best tip you can give (don't say everyone else gave good tips (Laughing out loud)) what did YOU find worked well for you and WHY?

For Arkady I used the slow approach method ie. feeding millet, then putting hand near, then letting him step up, then taking him out and then playing with him.

For Saffron, she was tame, until, I used the hold method, where you hold them in your hands and don't let them go - This did not work, infact it made her worse, and she has never been tame since. :D I have never found it to work on any budgie

For Isis and Nikio's brother, I try to take them out of the cage, by catching them with my hands (always moving my hands slowly and deliberately. This has proved very good for flighty birds and has worked on both of them, so much so that i can now get them to step up now and Isis is over a year old. :)

With Emmett I am using the combined catch and slow approach method and he is doing very well. :)

One tip that I think is really good, is to hold your budgie in your hand, like you would when clipping its wings, or toenails, or just inspecting it, but holding it losely, so the budgie can escape easily. I find that this teaches them not to fear being held as they realise that they will always be able to get away and will always be let out of the grip eventually.

1. How old was your budgie (s) when you purchased him/her

Approx 4wks

2. If you tamed your budgie right out of the nest, when did you start taming and handling the chick?

We started at 4wks, just gaining her trust and feeding her. It took her a few days to accept us.

3. Was your budgie tame a little or not at all?

Fairly tame, she stepped up and was happy to ride around on your shoulder. She was with other birds at all times and slowly grew to prefer their company over ours! She eventually moved to the aviary and picked out a handsome boyfriend.

4. When you tamed your budgie was he the only budgie, or did you buy them in pairs, or was he an addition? Did your first budgie stay tame, and how did the taming go for the additional budgie (s)

She was our only budgie, but was with our already tame cockatiel. Bubbles (the budgie) stayed tame for around 6months - however she is still tamer than our other aviary budgies.

5. What is your best tip you can give (don't say everyone else gave good tips (Laughing out loud)) what did YOU find worked well for you and WHY?

Be Patient! You must gain the birds trust before you can do anything else. Always be slow and quite around them, give them some time to become accustomed to you and never get angry at your bird, no matter what they do.

I can only answer the part about handling babies in the nest. I handle my baby budgies from the first day they are born. I handle them every day as it is a part of checking that they are being fed and there are no abnormalities or defects and that all is well. It helps a budgie feel relaxed about human contact. I especially handle more the babies of the more anxious "quacking" parents so the babies dont adopt the fearful traits. Daily handling of babies in the nest, socialises the budgie to people from the moment they are born. It helps form a basis for future training and bonding.

1. How old was your budgie (s) when you purchased him/her I was told approx 8 weeks but due to the fact he wasnt eating once I got him home and his 'short'tail feathers were still curled from the nest box I'm guessing 4 weeks.

2. If you tamed your budgie right out of the nest, when did you start taming and handling the chick? My old budgie was handled everyday from the nest box but wasnt taken out until he was fully weaned from the mum.

3. Was your budgie tame a little or not at all?

The one I have now is tame- very flighty with strangers though.

The nestbox baby was extremely tame- loved everyone but he did have alot more time spent with him,

4. When you tamed your budgie was he the only budgie, or did you buy them in pairs, or was he an addition? Did your first budgie stay tame, and how did the taming go for the additional budgie (s)My first budgies was always tamed seperate although birds from the aviary had sleepovers now and again!! (they were ex tame ones and stayed relatively tame.) After a while a new addition was always added but while they were tame they were never annoying little pests like the first one is!!

Also the one I have now is only just starting to fly to me and do stuff with me after a year so stick with it.

5. What is your best tip you can give (don't say everyone else gave good tips (Laughing out loud)) what did YOU find worked well for you and WHY?I found that clipping their wings and moving their cage out of view while handling. Once they had the first moult and the flights grew back I didnt redo them. Talk to them heaps, share your food, if they sulk in the cage go and get them out again!! Annoy them heaps- make them do everything with you!! If you dont annoy them too much but let them play by themselves- they wont be afraid of you bu they wont interact much either.

1. How old was your budgie (s) when you purchased him/her

Ozzie was 6 weeks old when i bought him from a local pet shop.

2. If you tamed your budgie right out of the nest, when did you start taming and handling the chick?

I tamed Blinkie right out of the nest, i started handling him when he was 1-2 weeks old. By the time he was 3 weeks old he was spending all his time with me except to be put back in the nest box for feeds and sleep (not sure i'd recommend this, i don't think most hens would tolerate it well).

3. Was your budgie tame a little or not at all?

Both Blinkie and Ozzie were tame from the word go.

4. When you tamed your budgie was he the only budgie, or did you buy them in pairs, or was he an addition? Did your first budgie stay tame, and how did the taming go for the additional budgie (s)

When i tamed Blinkie he was an only budgie and had my undivided attention. Ozzie was an addition one year later. He was tame within the first week of quarantine. By the time he joined Blinkie he was very tame. Both my boys have remained very tame.

5. What is your best tip you can give (don't say everyone else gave good tips (Laughing out loud)) what did YOU find worked well for you and WHY?

The BEST thing i ever did to tame ALL my store/breeder bought birds is start IMMEDIATELY. I always clip once for taming and if this wasn't done by the pet shop or breeder i'll do it myself first thing when i get home (before doing anything else). That's the "mean new mummy" part done. Everyone says give your new bird time to settle in, don't do too much with it in the first week or two. I couldn't disagree with this more. I sit them on my knee or shoulder and just sit down and watch tv/movie, or read a book for 1-2 hours before putting them in their cage for the first time. At first i usually have to scoop (open hands, let them step onto the palm of your hand) them up off the floor a few times because they flutter off, but most of the time they settle quickly and just sit looking me. I find they settle faster if you talk to them soothingly. Once they're calm i do some step ups with them and after a couple of hours i pop them in their cage. By doing this I become their comfort zone in a strange new place and am often preferred to the cage in the first few days. Using this method Ozzie was pacing at the cage door to come out for cuddles within a week.

I should note that this probably wouldn't work on adult or mature budgies. All the birds i've used this method on have been young babies.

it is good! Well done.

But i didn't know it was that hard to get them on your head and shulder.

Louy learnt that by him self!

But when ever he went on my head i went by a mirror.

Not only do i feel safe but he feels a lot safer with his reflection by his side.

:) Glad that Jimmie is doing well Welshman, she can NEVER replace your special Jim but she will be a delight in her own way by the sounds of it. And thankfully she is filling that awful void since Jim left us.

And a thanks to Elly for doing such a great job on this section, I am sure many bird owners will benefit!

Thank you Robin

Adrian is she doing this when you are around your wife? As funny as it may sound she may be doing this because she doesn't want her by you. To you Jimmie you are hers and a lot of time that is more of a dive bomb saying stay away from him.

watch as she gets older, goes through a molt, and become hormonal it may become more frequent so you may want to curve the behavior because it can become a nuisance. :D

1. How old was your budgie (s) when you purchased him/her

Harley was 8 Weeks; My new one is said to be 8 weeks and Queenie was 8 weeks.

2. If you tamed your budgie right out of the nest, when did you start taming and handling the chick?

Harley (about a week old) and Queenie (about 3 weeks old) where, my new one I believe has not been handled much

3. Was your budgie tame a little or not at all?

Harley was a bit agressive but I think that was due to the fact that he had handling but not alot. Queenie had more one on one as he was only from a small clutch and the only clutch the Breeder had at the time.

4. When you tamed your budgie was he the only budgie, or did you buy them in pairs, or was he an addition? Did your first budgie stay tame, and how did the taming go for the additional budgie (s)

Harley was an only child. Queenie was an addition. Harley did not stay tame but that was due to being abused by a visitor, Queenie stayed tame and helped Harley settle after he refused to be handled.

5. What is your best tip you can give (don't say everyone else gave good tips (Laughing out loud)) what did YOU find worked well for you and WHY?

Music. My mum told me to pick a piece of music that was relaxing and not to high pitched. You play this through once before you approach the cage. The have it on repeat. She said that the birds get to know this and can prepare themselves for the fact that they are going to be handled. I know with Both of them if I did not play this and stuck my hand in the cage then the would sometimes get a little freaked. However the tamer they got the less I had to do this. To the extent that with Queenie you went to the cage and He expected you to take him out.

Hope that helps

Bug - 9-10 weeks

Pip - 1,5 years

2. If you tamed your budgie right out of the nest, when did you start taming and handling the chick?

3. Was your budgie tame a little or not at all?

Non of them was handled at all, as wild as they can be .

4. When you tamed your budgie was he the only budgie, or did you buy them in pairs, or was he an addition? Did your first budgie stay tame, and how did the taming go for the additional budgie (s)

Bug was my only budgie when I got him. It took just over a week until he was tame and started talking humen.

When I got Pip I already had Bug. He doesn't talk as much but is just as tame as before.

It tooks a while longer to get Pip tame but now he steps up really nice. I used millet to get him used to my hands and when he wasn't afraid of them anymore I started to get him up on the hand.

5. What is your best tip you can give (don't say everyone else gave good tips (Laughing out loud)) what did YOU find worked well for you and WHY?

Get the budgie used to your hand before you try to approach him/her, the budgie should have been up on your hand several times to reach the millet before you do any approching attemps.

It's possible to tame unhandled older budgies even if they are older.

Newton is my only tame budgie.

Apart from her new babies. They seem tame enough, but I'm not going to jinx it now.

I'm superstitious.

1. How old was your budgie (s) when you purchased him/her

I'd say she was about 3-6 months. They never really told me. She was definitely under 1 year.

2. If you tamed your budgie right out of the nest, when did you start taming and handling the chick?

n/a (Newton was labelled as a handfed budgie at the petshop)

3. Was your budgie tame a little or not at all?

Nooooo way. So scared.

4. When you tamed your budgie was he the only budgie, or did you buy them in pairs, or was he an addition? Did your first budgie stay tame, and how did the taming go for the additional budgie (s)

Newton was alone with me for a year and a half, almost 2 years.

When I added Napoleon to the mix after quarantine, she stayed tame. Became a bit more nippy but still same old bossy Newton.

5. What is your best tip you can give? What did YOU find worked well for you and WHY?

Be patient.

Seriously. It took me forever to get Newton used to me. FOREVER. I wasn't aggressive about her taming though. I pretty much just let her get used to me. Maybe that's why she's bossy haha.

The babies I'm taming and handling now, same deal. Just be patient and never ever force the bird into a situation they don't want to be in. I've tried all those other techniques with my other birds and they're not tame at all. But then again, I also bought those birds when they were older and I never clip their wings. A solo budgie is easy to tame. Every other additional budge was a difficult task. I never tamed any of them. The month quarantine was simply not enough time.

With Newton I spent my entire school year doing my homework beside her, letting her fly around me and come up to me. I would rarely attack her with my hands, and eventually I began to approach her but she trusted me. It was a slowwww process. In fact, part of me doesn't even remember the transition period.

Just be patient and accept that some birds are just not going to be the tamest birds in the world. Still, love them all the same!

Mash was extremely flighty and bitey when we got him, the type that would latch on and then chew..ouch!

4. When you tamed your budgie was he the only budgie, or did you buy them in pairs, or was he an addition? Did your first budgie stay tame, and how did the taming go for the additional budgie (s)

McGyver was an only budgie, but she did have a lorikeet she snuggled with in the early days before we decided they were exploring with their beaks too much and separated them, they still play together when both indoors and supervised.

Mash was eventually tamed because he was getting jealous that McGyver was getting all the attention and treats. I was feeding her nuts one day and he flew down right beside me and grabbed a nut and flew off again. Now he's almost as tame as McGyver.

5. What is your best tip you can give (don't say everyone else gave good tips (Laughing out loud)) what did YOU find worked well for you and WHY?

McGyver was hand-raised to save her life, and I don't really advocate hand-raising for the sake of a tame budgie, as I have had plenty of babies just as tame straight from the nest if handled often. I guess the best tip would be a lot of early intervention is the simplest method. And for the more difficult customers such as Mash, a lot of patience, re-assurance, perseverance and band-aides might do the trick. Now he's a wonderful bird, he's a proud daddy, the first to land on you when you enter his aviary, and his biting has been toned down to gentle nibbles and kissing thankfully.

Hi Guys,

We've only had Marty for 4 and half months now but here it goes:

1. How old was your budgie (s) when you purchased him/her

We purchased him from Bird City at 6 weeks old.

2. If you tamed your budgie right out of the nest, when did you start taming and handling the chick?

He didn't come directly from the nest.

3. Was your budgie tame a little or not at all?

Not at all. He never ate or drank for the first day and didn't do anything at all in his cage. It was hard to get him out of his cage too. As soon

4. When you tamed your budgie was he the only budgie, or did you buy them in pairs, or was he an addition? Did your first budgie stay tame, and how did the taming go for the additional budgie (s)

Marty is our only budgie. Our first successful interaction with him was when I brought him out of the cage and put some seed in my other hand and let him eat. He ate some seed while around us, but was still very jumpy.

5. What is your best tip you can give (don't say everyone else gave good tips (Laughing out loud)) what did YOU find worked well for you and WHY?

The big secret in my opionion is just spending a lot of time with your bird. As much as you can. Marty is VERY tame now and he will let almost anyone take him out of his cage and will happily stay with them. We recently went away to Adelaide for the National Taekwondo Championships, so he stayed home on his own for 4 days. When we got home, he was very jumpy again. Not like day one, but still very jumpy. It took a couple of days for him to return to normal again.

The big secret is just spend heaps of time with your bird and get him/her use to everyone.

When we are home we leave his cage open and he usually comes out when he wants to. His wings are cliped so he can't fly back in, but he manages to get our attention very easily.

I hope this is of help.

Best Regards

Paul
