Flood Almost Killed My Baby Budgie

Hey Everyone,

It's been a long time since I posted here. To make a long story short, I received a job opportunity overseas, and I had to drop everything to get paperwork ready for my birds and prepare for the move...

Now that I'm here in Saipan, I have set up an aviary for all my birds, and they love it! Yesterday we had about 12 hours of heavy rain... when I went to the aviary to check on everyone, the nest box was flooded! The mom had abandoned her little hatchling of only 3 weeks old. When I found him, we was stretched out as far as possible, with is little beak resting on the bottom of the hole leading into the nest box. He was sitting in about 3 inches of water... just his head was poking out.

I immediatly took him out, and took him into a warm area, but his legs were stiff, and a blood feather broke in his tail. It wasn't looking good. I went to the one pet shop on this island to find baby formula, and they don't carry any! Fortunately, I have some Mazuri pellets for small birds, and a blender. I ground up the pelets into a fine powder, and mixed it with hot water. I was able to find an old syringe from a previous vet visit, and I started hand feeding.

Fortunately he reacted well, and started to give me a feeding response right away. It's been about 20 hours, and he's doing great. Dirty... but warm and dry. As I write this, he's happily sleeping in my lap... guess I better go so I can wash the lower part of my shirt off. :feedbirds:

Here's a picture of him... I hope he makes it. Niko_s.jpg

Hi Everyone,

"Niko" is doing well, and is almost one month old already. I'm still not sure if it's a he or a she, but it is doing great. Here's a picture I took today, just after a messy feeding:

Niko_11-14-06_s.jpg

I have a question, what's the best way to wean him, and how do you tell that it's the best time to wean? I have some little Mazuri pellets in his dish all day, and figure he'll start eating them soon. As for the baby forumula I'm feeding... I'm still feeding crushed up pellets since I can't get formula on this island (it's only 14 miles long). I would think he'd switch over easily since it's the exact same flavor as the "formula" he's already eating. I'd prefer not to wean him using seeds, but I'm not a trained breeder, so I'm not sure of the best way to do this.

Any help would be great! Thanks.

looks like a he with the pink pink cere but I see the white nasel rings that could indicate a female.

I don't know much about weaning and I am sure someone will come along but the best diet is a little bit of everything.

Veggie/Fruits

Pellets and Seeds (this is good for them because it exercises them to husk the seed inside)

Eggfood

and I am sure there is much more when you browse through the food and nutrition section of this site.

:) Another thing to hand feed him with is human infant rice cereal (Farex is what i use since i also live remote) and as the bird gets older i mix a little seed and mashed greens in with it for them.. I've always just let them wean when ready, but always have seeds about for them to play with until they get use to the whole seed idea.. I have not fed pellets so i cant advise you any on that :)

Dave,

I have used wholegrain bread soaked in water. One of mine liked it so much he just stood there and guzzled it for ages . You could also add some vitamins. I did not have to hand feed him again. I also give it to my parent birds when they have chicks.

I gave my little chick wholegrain bread soaked in water. He really loved it and was feeding himself in no time. You could add some vitamins to his water too. I also give this to my parent birds. I will post a photo of him if I can. Believe it or not he turned out a normal shape.

Oh my gosh! He looks STUFFEED!!! Is it okay for them to get THAT full? I've never seen that before!

Thanks for the tips, I will go get some wholewheat bread tomorrow and give it a try. :)) Thanks again.

:) Is it good to give them that much bread? It just swells up in their stomach and as we tell people who ask about feeding wild birds at the wildlife shelter, there are no bakers in the wild. I would take it really easy with those processed foods. :book: Edited by Phoebe
