  1. Hi had a blow out on PC and changed mobiles so was off line for a while. What has happened with your family of 4????
  2. Hi All, My two clutches of young had to be moved to cages while i cleaned and disinfected my avery, also had to seal holes up for a mice problem and am treating all my birds against infection from contaminated food. what i find strange is the young scratch all the food out into bottom tray, then eat it, roll in it and sleep on it. Never seen this behaviour in 3 years i;ve bred. Is this normal? Also i placed a female away from her mate in Avery but she screeched daily so i put her back with him in cage again but she did the weirdest thing! she sat at the foodbowl and picked all seeds out and threw them on the floor. Almost like a maniac! what is this behaviour? i took her out again and put her back in avery and she still screeched and kept herself away from other budgies. now with the move into cages due to Avery clean up she is as quiet as a mouse. well actually normal. what is that kind of behaviour? stress? breeding condition? ceres is very dark!

    Mice In Aviary

Ag my favourite subject! Mice can eradicate your flock in 1 week as they eat your birds food and pee on it. Your birds get this food in and die from Pharatyphus (excuse spelling).they chewed through cement?wood and wire.plastic. ? They laugh at you they chew through it.flooding helps zits they are faster than lightning.Poison. I'm a softy and I hate killing little creatures but my birds come first. My specialist mixed me rat poison (BLUE) IN A BOTTLE OF SWEET WINE. WE HAV A PRODUCT CALLED HANEPOOT. They go for the sweet wine and invest poison and die. It's imperative that location must be were no dog, cat.or bird can get to it.no kid can get to it.I have a double entry door like a safe door. I left some seeds there among food containers that r sealed. Took a yoghurt cup and cut it in half, stone in it do can't be tipped and put the cocktail in .empty my Aviary of over 100 birds and am treating them with special stuff for them.Tommorrow I disinfect and scrub aviary and put poison down again. Well keep birds in cages for 5 day treatment of meds. One sign is a protruding breastfeeding bone.birds and mice love seeds BUT theye r grave enemies Sad but TRUE! TINY SWEET MICE BUT NA ST SICKNESS! KILLING YOUR ENTIRE FLOCK CHOP CHOP.I LOVE YOUR AVIARY ! IT'S ABSOLUTELY STUFF ING. GREAT Maz7 *I meant stunning And Nasty sickness.
  4. Lettuce,Spinach,Beetroot leaves,sweetcorn,strawberries,apple,carrots,grapes...I've tried cucumber, and other veggies but no go. I've also tried chopped up in my electric processor no go. One other one they sort of nibbled a bit at was Butternut pumpkin, but i suppose any yellow pumpkin-(RAW), only my sweetcorn i will cook sometimes, but they prefer raw.
  5. Thanks Nadene! By the way My Budgie that was so sick recovered completely! He is gorgeous but I am too scared to expose him to the Aviary. He's in a cage with a small female Lutino which I bought Calypso and she was pooping whole seeds out but she is perfect now. I find the best thing for all of them is Pro-biotic powder sprinkled over their food! The one Budgie (Rasta) that i bought from a store......supposed to be reputable-has been sick from beginning, vomiting, with that sticky substance on the head. He/She comes right then relapses again. I keep Rasta seperate in a cage in my one room. He is beautiful green&yellow but his ceres is mottled pale blue- I'm not sure if he is Male. Maybe his condition makes him not show a proper blue. Will upload a photo or two maybe someone can identify his sex for me. Just as I think he gets better -he / she gets sick again. Has he got Megabac? I want to complain to the store i bought him from, because their carelessness can cost a person dearly if a bird infects the rest.
  6. i was right with all except no.7 i wasnt sure.
  7. My budgies love sweetcorn-boiled or raw. you can give them raws hredded carrot and Spinach too. They also love beetroot leaves and the red stalks - their favourite is the Spinach and Sweetcorn though. They sometimes eat apple- the sweet ones, i use the red/yellow apples. they might not like the Green Granny Smith ones???? sorry the Spinach i just give them the whole leaf and stalk, i pin it to the cage with a washing peg - they absolutely love it and rip it to shreds and gulp it down.
  8. hi is it normal for Siblings or young to feed each other? they are hardly out of nest and parents are still weaning them. Noticed one brother feeding two younger siblings. Also noted one young from another nest feeding the youngest runt from another nest. so sweet Man!
  9. hi there give fresh in morning and remove uneaten at end of day. mine also wander at bottom of cage-i think its an old instinct to forage for food -don't worry. Put toys in cage-bells andladders to keep them busy and active. They r curious critters.
  10. Hi Aquafroste my budgies won't eat carrots either unless in thin slivers like peels but they love beetroot leaves, spinach, lettuce, apple in thin slices, strawberries, swiss chard, asparagus plant leaves, silverbeet. They won't eat anything either in beginning but they attack the spinach ravenously. Hope this helps. Parents when feeding chicks are more interested in greens than normally. I try to give my birds fresh greens regularly but its impossible to do it everyday as I have 100 birds(they quickly become so many when you have an indoor avery)and I am now planting greens in garden for them or it can become costly I meant an outdoor avery. I have birds on my indoor Patio in cages but that's parrots, canary, resting budgie pairs, finch rescues(young)-runts I have an outdoor aviary with 3 sections and an indoor. Patio with cages.
  11. My first Lutino My second Male PixieBlue These two were paired until she died on old year's Eve 2013, unexpectedly from a bite under her wing that just wouldn't heal! RIP my Darling Tulip! Her first & only Clutch was Peanut, Lemon,Rainbow and Splash. I sold Lemon but kept all three the others Lilly and Poff Poffs 1st Clutch was Powderpuff and English -just like Dad-Powderpuff died from flu or Crop Canker-Vet could not save her. English escaped on a very windy day.Crying is not the word.
  12. welcome Jim and lots of luck, will enjoy your updates. You have some lovely Birds. I also have Cobalts, yellow heads, Lutinos.1Albino,1English show budgie-(left on my Profile) his name is Poff-Poff. Fathered 4 clutches so far in 3 years.Resting him+Female now.And a Yellow Cinnamin, some 32 different colours. I have an exceptional chick from a clutch that is weaning now-He is Black, white+powder grey, not a clue what this mutation is called!I've named him Mandela! He actually feeds his siblings at times and grooms the 2 moms from his box. I had 2 females share a box!
  13. Do chicks with slight blue not turn tan or brown for females and the pink turns blue for boys? Do the females not have Bulbeous ceres and the Males flatter with nostrils further apart? Asking Finnie for a reply on this. Kaz has a page on identifying budgies gender from babies on etc on1 of forums. Do I have it wrong?
  14. Hi and welcome. Don't forget to read Breeding forum on this site.for tips on egg binding possibilities etc.Make sure Budgies are over a year old. Good luck and enjoy!
  15. Oh my Gosh I have much to learn! I didn't know they can be mounted by several males! I've always bred them in cages. It's my 1st time breeding in Avery! There's 1 father in Avery, other 1 is being rested with Albino Mom. There's 1 brother in Avery (Lutino-cross)but all other males are new. Thank you so much 4 that info!
  16. My one bird I handreared does that to me and she definitely is not trying to mate with me! Its a sign of endearment. Don't worry. More worrysome is that the chicks are not eating themselves! They must pick up seeds+dehusk them+eat?! Huh? Phew you have really got problems. I've seperated my 1 female from her male for 3weeks due to an injury on her Ceres, the 1st thing she did when I put her in aviary yesterday is to hook up with her male, groomin each other. Asa the chicks are stable and pickin up+dehusking those seeds you can put her with male. They'll be fine!
  17. Hi Finnie by the way I don't colony breed my budgies. I sell them to certain shops. I keep different coloureds +mate them with budgies I've bought in.always fresh gene pools. Sisters have males fr other gene pools, brothers too. I don't allow fathers nor mothers to mate with own offspring. I always put a Male+ female in a cage till they bond b4 I put in avery+ sure as can b they stick to that mate.lucky me I suppose but I only have 32 budgies now+some of those chicks will be sold.
  18. All fine now! Pinkies are tiny!scared those huge feet tread on a tiny pink neck.I've handreared 1 so far Fievel. She's a cuty pie bird.
  19. We are experiencing a heatwave deluxe in Cape Town past 2 days. 36 degrees C in shade.phew! Fans out for birds+shade cloths, water, spraying.poor nunus! They were gaping@ noon so I had to intervene.
  20. A dove grey bordering on powder blue. He has2 blue cheekpatches- he really is exceptional and it looks like a male. Flatceres, not bulbous and pink coloured.
  21. The Female shud not lay eggs while her+Male are seperated+without a box.are the chicks eating by themselves? I would not let Male back yet. Is the splayed leg chick okay yet? Can you surf the internet unrestricted or is it costly-cause u could google Splayed leg budgie+it will give you exact iinstructions. I'm quickly going to chech the different forums on this site. I saw it somewhere. Will come back to you in 5. Hi Aquafroste found article: its on this forum under Health + Tips and written by Kaz; heading Splayed legs in chicks. I suggest u read it and also Bird Safety another subject, there's also Budgi Behaviour. Just check under Forums all the subjects that get discussed.good luck:)
  22. This chick is so extraordinary with its Black and white colouring I've named him Mandela- Born on 15 March 2014
  23. i have a question for Kaz, Finnie, any Breeder with more knowledge than I have-this is the first time this has happened. My one hen was disturbed while hatching eggs, One of the Lovebirds got through from other side of Aviary and forced Mom out of the nest and was sitting on the eggs. No injuries were sustained but it upset her, so she ended up laying 9 eggs all in all, because her eggs didnt hatch (1st round ) I gave her a foster baby that was too small to survive from other nests. She has had a successful batch of 5 chicks early last year. All went well and then suddenly an egg hatched of the 1st round?! That was all still fine because both chicks thrived and did well, i removed the dudd eggs that looked unfertile. I left 4 eggs that looked possible in but didnt have hope they would hatch and they kept the 2 chicks warm and centered anyway. Now the Chicks have down and pin-feathers, and huge feet. BUT 2 tiny babies have just hatched and she is feeding all but the big chicks are going to trample on the tiny ones. Can I still foster out the two bigger chicks (They were born around 20,22nd March) to a mother with similar size chicks, she only has 2. To prevent the young ones from being trampled or should I hand-rear the two big chicks- are they old enough for me to do it? I have done it before and successfully. with bent spoon and breeding feed for parakeets. Putting in millet de-husked in between and grated apple. This is the chick I handreared: These are the chicks i want to foster this is the nest i want to put them in very mild female:She is a cinnamon and it would be her sister's chicks This is their chicks that i would add the two 2 for fostering- is it safe?
  24. I've never had a splayed legged chick but I saw an article somewhere about this Aquafroste on this site maybe. Have you checked the FAQ section+different forums? Some on budgie talk, some on health section, but I'll check also. Your chicks look bigger than I thought, and quite healthy! How does mom look, thin+drained? You must give her Groats (seeds)+silver beet(spinach).to built up her strength. Will come back2you about where u can find splayed leg instructions.
  25. okay so mom is feeding both+both crops r full?the stone is what I use each time I bury a dead bird. I always put stones over the grave to prevent other animals from digging up.so it seems you don't have to worry about mom+chicks as long as they r fed. Its terrible when a bird won't eat or dies from starvation. Very sad! I cry over every single bird that dies! I'd say put him in another room and put a radio on. He'll survive fine.
